I had initially tried the Ctrl+Drag, but the Crtl key doesn't do anything.

That is strange.

Holding ctrl while dragging should give you a (+) sign on the arrow.
Im not able to make that NOT happend.. So I don't know why that does not work for you.
Maybe some other program you have is hijacking the ctrl key so that key press is not sent to MC. !?

I am using the Commander style, it seems that if I right click to select a file, then Ctrl+drag it will copy, is that the way it is suppose to work?

Is there a simple way to change the color coding to all black text?

Drag then press ctrl to alter mode.

Default colors are changed in ExplorerPanel Settings.
File Coloring based on rules are changed under the "ColorWheel" icon on the toolbar. there you can customize them or disable/enable them
