find files and folders that are too long
« on: April 13, 2016, 14:23:49 »
I need to search a hard drive and identify all files and folders that contains more than 255 characters. How can that be accomplished using Multi Commander?

I searched the forums and came up empty. Ultimately I'd like to be able to define the max number of characters it should find (anything greater than X).

Why do I need this? I have an old hard drive with a lot of nested folders which exceed 255 characters and I cannot burn them to a CD. I'd like to identify them all and then rename each one.

thanks

There is a 'Path Length'  file property, You can enable this as a column and you get a column with the path lenght of every file you list.
So you can browse around and see when you think 255+.

With file search, you can create a rule based on the file property.
in the advanced dialog you can create searches based on Extended Properties,
Add a rule for "Path Length" > 255

ok that worked.

Any chance the search can be saved? Seems that i'd have to define this each time i want to search for those files.

thanks!
