Had lost the thumbnails
« on: September 01, 2025, 03:32:15 »
Hello,

I had a problem with the picture files : instead of a miniature of the picture, the IrfanView icon was showed. OK it said it was a picture, but seeing the picture is much better.

I found a thread of 2015 from somebody who had the same problem.

From the Configuration menu he was said to go to the Core Settings command, then to the File System tab, and then find Thumbnails system at the end.

The tip was to switch the thumbnails system to Internal, from Windows or Auto.

Well you know, I had just the opposite. I had the Internal thunbnails system selected, as soon as I selected Auto the thumbnails appeared again.

I remember I once had to refresh the thumbnails in the Windows explorer with something like
Code: [Select]
ie4uinit.exe -show, I presume that something equivalent has to exist in MultiCommander ?

By the way, felicitations for the quality of the scrolling. The first line stays stable, just the next pictures take the place of the ones that were displayed.

So you did not have tumbnails but fix it.. Okey good.. using Windows in settings is preferred. It support many more file formats for thumbnails.  Auto will select Windows by default if you are on Win8+
Using Internal. MC only cache thumbnails to memory. so a restart will clear cache. Why It first did not work for you I don't know. But thumbnail system can log all error and what it does to the logs and any error would have been outputed there.

Thank you.
Oh, I come back because I had problems with recently downloaded pictures. Is there any mail alert normally ?
So, I used ie4uinit.exe again, and observed that Multicommander is way quicker than explorer to refresh the icons (after restarting Windows).
The picture quality for the thumbnail system is set to good, perhaps it is important.
My machine has 64 GB of memory, perhaps it helps to assume a good quality of cache.

Picture quality only used if thumbnail system is set to internal.
Recommended is to leave the Thumbnail system on auto or Windows (if you have Windows 10+)
Windows thumbnail engine is faster and better. However if you have problem with it in windows explorer you might get same issue in MC. Then Internal can be used.

Internal thumbnail engine support less image formats than the built-in in Windows.
