Translations And Language Packs / Re: Language Changes 6.2> 6.4
« on: July 27, 2016, 15:11:33 »
Mathias,
there appear to be some errors in 3 of the english xml files.

The xml tag "<itemx" (instead of "<item") appears in:

ExplorerPanel_lang_en.xml
FileSearch_lang_en.xml
MultiCommander_lang_en.xml

I can't replicate the column-resizing issue in 2215...  ???

In fact, I have not managed to break anything yet :)

Good job, Mathias!

Pierre,

HIDE works again in Beta 6.4 :)

Glad to hear you're game for a challenge!

What I found most useful was to read the entire Script sub-forum; every post.  Lots of good tips and advice in there.

Also get your head firmly around the difference between Custom Commands and MultiScript.  It will save a lot of pain!

Custom Commands are simple one-liners - ALWAYS.
MultiScript allows flow control & tests, loops, etc., including the ability to call Custom Commands. Powerful stuff.

The MultiScript debugger is a great little environment for developing and testing.

Lastly, read ALL the help on Custom Commands and MultiScript.  Invaluable stuff.

Do some experimenting & if you get really stuck, there is always someone here to help.

Hi Bob and welcome to the world's best File Commander forum :)

There is a Custom Command 'MC.Explorer.SetViewMode' which takes a single parameter Mode that will change the Explorer Panel view mode.

But... there is no function to determine which view mode you are currently using (or at least none that I can find).  If that is, indeed, the case you would need to bind two hotkeys: one for set view mode to detail and another to set view mode to thumbnails.

On the other hand, if you really want a single key to toggle the view mode, I can think of a way to do that using MultiScript.  Let me know if you want to dip your toes into the warm but murky waters of scripting...

(Hopefully somebody else will jump in and say "I know a really easy way to do that").

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Empty Search Results Tab
« on: July 18, 2016, 18:06:11 »
Hi Mathias.

I know you plan to eventually do away with Search Results in explorer panel tabs, but in the meantime...

The File Search Results tab is created as soon as the Find Files dialog is instantiated.
If the Find is then cancelled, the dialog is dismissed but the empty File Search Results tab remains.

Is it relatively simple to implement a change in behaviour such that the tab is closed if the Find is cancelled (one less tab to close or to be distracted by)?

TIA

I can confirm that "MC.FileSearch.Search" option "SEARCHINALLSELECTED" works as expected (very useful, BTW) and
"MC.FileSearch.Search" option "HIDE" is fixed :)

Thanks for the expanded explanation, Mathias.

As an experiment I just packed (through MC 6.4 Beta), a few files & folders (including empty folders), then opened the .zip in WinZip.

Switched the view in Winzip from "All files" (this is the same as MC) to "Files by Folder" and the two empty folders are, indeed, in the archive.  Seems it depends on how you look inside the archive.

Not hit the bug yet :)

So far, so good - let us know if any more specific testing needs doing to pinpoint the "annoying bugs".

Alan

Actually Zip does allow empty folders by default (at least in a Windows environment).

I have been using WinZip since v6 and that has always been the case.

So do 7zip, zip, Peazip, RAR, LZ, etc...

That is a strange message.

I have just compared the two Multicommander.xml files from 6.2 and 6.4 and the only differences are minor: settings I have left as default in 6.4 and those I have tailored in 6.2.  Nothing that could suggest corruption.

Re you sure the path to drive G: exists and is mapped correctly?

Mathias,
may I make a suggestion regarding alpha/beta testing?

As someone who single-handedly developed and maintained 60+ mission-critical applications for a multi-£million, global business and who did all the alpha (and most of the beta)-testing, I know how easy it is to "overlook" your own coding errors and also carry out effective regression testing.

When you get some change to the code-base ready for alpha, ask your testers here on the forum to specifically test an aspect of the application that may break something.

That way, you have less to think about all on your own and you will get "real-world" feedback from those of us who use MC all the time and who rely on the new version working as expected.

Just an idea...

...fix for the coming version

Mathias, does that mean in 6.4?

Alan

365
That makes a lot of sense to me :)

Only one code base and panel type to maintain, and consistent presentation & functionality.

Way to go, Mathias (let's hope you find the time)...

Hi Pierre.

No, it is not only you :(  HIDE seems to be ignored.
I also cannot get ${sourcepath} to work either:  it always searches in the target path, even if I specify PANEL="ACTIVE".

Initial testing on 64-bit looks very promising.

I copied 60Gb from one physical HDD to another and, while that was running, started a second copy in its own queue in the other direction.  While both were running, I created a directory on one drive, copied the MC install folder into it and deleted the contents of my \Temp\ folder from the other drive.

All operations completed in good time without a single error or any (observable) slowdown.

Looking good, Mathias :)

Glad it appears to be OK now.

I'm a Thunderbird user & I would have been happy to help troubleshoot that (potential) end of the issue had it been necessary.

Alan

PS: Happy to start a new topic if it helps :)

Hi Alan.

In the interests of scientific enquiry and curiosity, I am replying to your post of 35 minutes ago to see if you get the notification :)

Which email client do you use, BTW?

Script / Re: Unexplained if() Behaviour in MultiScript
« on: June 29, 2016, 10:03:09 »
Thanks for the explanation, Mathias.

I clearly had forgotten how strcmp() works after 40 years.  That's why I need you youngsters to jog my memory now and again :)

Script / Re: Unexplained if() Behaviour in MultiScript
« on: June 28, 2016, 23:54:24 »
Thanks for the reply Mathias.

Yeah - I remember C (never did much C++) and how == works.  Are you saying that the MultiScript equality operator actually compares the addresses of the two values, rather than their contents?

So I need to use StrIsEqual() (the equivalent of the C strcmp() function), yes?

I understand if you don't want to change the behaviour - regression testing is a bitch and angry users are even worse  :o

I'm very familiar with the MultiScript string functions by now; I spent a couple of hours this morning checking and amending the documentation page for them  ;)

Script / Unexplained if() Behaviour in MultiScript
« on: June 28, 2016, 18:07:59 »
Can somebody please explain the behaviour as shown in the debugger output below (Jungle?  Mathias?  Anyone with a brain younger than mine...?)

The variables' values clearly show that execution should never enter the if().  And yet...

TIA
