Thank you for the clarification.  I was, indeed, using the program files rather than the user files.

Perhaps somewhere there is a note regarding the difference between the two, but I have not found any reference as yet.  However, the documentation is so extensive and so detailed, (for which you have my admiration!), I have yet to finish studying it in its entirety.

Support and Feedback / Button bar options disappeared
« on: January 17, 2016, 18:03:57 »
I have been using the button bar showing just the top row.

However, just tried changing it back to show 4 rows.

The display is amended after the mandatory MC restart but the content of the lower 3 rows just shows blank buttons with no text visible.

How can I fix that?

Interesting.  It's good to be able to modify the appearance of individual buttons via the Button Editor but it would also be good if the font used on an individual button could also be changed via the Button Editor.

The suggestion that you can change the button fonts globally, by modifying the multibuttons.xml file interests me, but the example

Code: [Select]
<buttonpanel id="1" rows="4" cols="8" fontsize="20" fontname="Comic Sans MS" iconsize="medium">

illustrating a possible change does not seem to work, or, at least, not for me.

Support and Feedback / Re: Using Quick Keys.
« on: January 16, 2016, 14:37:46 »
In case any other Forum readers read this thread or find it in the future may I add a a quick note to update the information in the link you posted earlier with reference to access keys:   https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb226831(v=vs.85).aspx

The information on that page is somewhat out-of-date, probably because it still refers to Windows XP and later.

On Vista, (OK, I know, obsolescent!), the same effect can be obtained via
Control Panel / Ease of Access Centre and then look for Make the Keyboard easier to use

Almost at the bottom of that window under the heading Make it easier to use keyboard shortcuts is the option Underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys which may be checked or unchecked as required.

On Win 10, the route is slightly different.  Settings / Ease of Access / Keyboard.  Under Other Settings there is a switch to enable or disable shortcut underlines.

However, I think the simple alternative - when wishing to see any underlines, pressing the Alt key has a lot to recommend it - simplicity!!

Thanks for yet another informative response.

One point to clarify.  When I wrote Alt+F+Q I meant hold Alt down, then press F and while still holding Alt down, press Q.

Thank you for your very fast response!

Apologies for using the incorrect terminology for Access keys; thank you for the correction.

Referring to the menubars. I tend to configure them to be visible; I should have clarified that point.

You wrote ... "No Alt+F do not open file menu.. Alt and then F. (It is actually a difference.. because you 'can' press alt and release the alt key and then press F) That is all standard windows behavior"

Actually, you can use either strategy.  Alt+F opens the file menu, but so does Alt then F

However, your final comment is the most useful and resolves the original query for me.

You wrote "The underline key will run that command if you are quick navigating to it from the keyboard.. like if you do Alt then F then F    the find files command is run."

Either of the following actions invokes the Quick Copy feature:

Alt then F then Q
or
Alt+F+Q

Thank you for your courtesy and patience in responding in detail.

It does seem counter-intuitive.

Using Windows Explorer the underline is not used at all; some menu choices offer a short cut, (quick key), and others do not.  There is no risk of confusion. For example, to make a copy of something, open the Edit menu, highlight the item and you can then use either the direct menu option, Copy or the short cut Ctrl+C

Where the underline is used, in Firefox for example, if you open the File menu you could press V to invoke the print preview page with no further intervention. You could also, after marking some content on a page, open the Edit menu and press C, rather than the short-cut Ctrl+C, and the marked section is copied to the clipboard with no further intervention.

I fully understand that Alt+F would open the File menu, Alt+C would open the configuration menu and so on, but my confusion is based upon the use of the underlined key within a given menu.

For example, once the File Menu is open there are a number of options with a key letter underlined:
New, Tab, View File, ... Copy, Copy(Quick) and so on.

What is the purpose of using the underline convention within a menu if, in fact, no action is invoked.  That is really the source of my confusion.

I'm using the Explorer style of MC.

I guess I must be doing something wrong, or have forgotten some elementary rule, (if so, I apologise in advance), but I am trying, for example, to use a short-cut to make a quick copy.

In this case, the option on the File menu shows

Copy (Quick)

which I understand to mean that the letter "Q" can be used as the quick key.  However, this does not seem to work.

I have tried it in combination with other keys, (Ctrl, Alt, Shift) with no effect.

Can it be done?

Thanks again.

I will experiment with the different options at another time.

I take your point about Vista; I anticipate upgrading that box in the not too distant future.

I've now ported most of my picture files to a Win 10 box, so if, in the unlikely event that there are any issues, I'll let you know.

Excellent!

Using either the Internal, or the Windows, alternatives, the thumbnails appear.

Initially, there appeared to be a lack of consistency in behaviour as some heavily populated folders displayed all images after a few seconds, whilst other, less populated, files simply displayed the default icon.

I then tried changing the Number of threads setting from Auto to 10.  This seems to help.

Unless there are any unexpected issues I am using the Windows option, which, despite implying Win 7+, seems fine, so far.   I have not had time to exhaustively test for consistency and repeatability but at the moment everything does seem to be well-behaved.

Some folders partially populate with images, but by reverting to a List view and then back to a Thumbnail view the missing images get created.

Thanks for your courteous response to yet another query.

The more I explore this software, the more impressive it becomes!

Investigating further, I wonder if there is a bug somewhere.

But, first, in my original post I had omitted to confirm that I was using the Thumbnail list option; this was the obvious option  anyway.

On my Vista box:

- using Windows Explorer, I can view the expected jpg thumbnails.

- using MC, the only thumbnails are blank, or rather black, boxes.

On one of my Win 10 boxes, after copying some jpg files across, (normally all of my pictures are stored on the Vista box):

- using Windows Explorer, I can view the expected jpg thumbnails.

- using MC, I can view the expected jpg thumbnails.

Perhaps it is an issue that is related to the (admittedly obsolescent) operating system.

Having checked as far as I can I still cannot see how you can get thumbnail views showing the actual jpg picture.

Checking the graphic on the Main Application Layout page, for example, the right hand pane shows exactly what I am trying to achieve.

There is a range of similar graphics in the Screen Shot Gallery, (http://multicommander.com/screenshots), admittedly showing an older build of MC.  Has something changed in the current release?

I suspect that I am missing, or misunderstanding something that is very obvious - in that case, my apologies!

Support and Feedback / Re: Lost display in File View window
« on: December 23, 2015, 16:55:32 »
Thanks for your reply.

The odd thing was that I could not regain the display of the the File View window but after a restart everything was OK.  Almost as if as setting had been corrupt in soma way.  Simply restarting MC didn't resolve the issue.

I will try the beta later and see if I can break something again!

To be fair, though, given how comprehensive and feature-rich MC is, it appears to be remarkably bug-free.

Support and Feedback / Lost display in File View window
« on: December 22, 2015, 17:43:49 »
An odd occurrence.

Checking out some configuration ideas, I opened Explorer Panel Settings and, in the Save on Exit section unchecked the Remember open paths option.

The odd effect is that, in the right hand pane both the folder tree and file view window were behaving as expected but, in the left hand pane, whilst the folder tree was fully functional, the file view window was blank.  The only way I could repopulate it and return the the original settings, that is, with the Remember open paths option checked, was to restart the computer.

No real harm done, other than the inconvenience but this seems odd behaviour.  Even more irritating was the fact that there seemed to be no obvious way to repopulate the pane; using soft or hard refreshes had no effect.

Minor bug, or operator error?

Thank you for your quick reply - much appreciated.

Apologies for my oversight in not further investigating the information available.

As I have not, as yet,  created any of my own commands I had overlooked point of actually opening the Configurations / User Defined Commands.Thoughtless of me - wasting your time on such a small point.

Support and Feedback / Understanding Aliases
« on: December 19, 2015, 14:14:22 »
This question arose after reading the response to the thread Folder access

When I checked Configuration / Manage Aliases I got the following pre-set options;

c, d, e -    giving direct links to the root of the respective drives, if they exist.

n -           allowing the use of Notepad to open a specified file

cu, lm -    giving direct access to two useful hive locations.

The remaining two options appear to link to some unidentifiable folder/ file

g -           "@3146babb..."
p -           "0dafc203..."

Unlike the preceding entries, they do not give any clue as to their usage.

I know I could easily enter the alias in the MC command line but, being of a cautious nature, I really do like to know where I may be going; where do the "g" and "p" aliases lead?

If I try them am I going to do some unexpected, and unwanted, to my computer?

At intervals the tip

appears.

Is it possible to add an equivalent short-cut to reach the Google Drive folder?

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Re: Undo operations

Thank you for your courteous and informative reply.

I agree that it is not appropriate for all actions.  Basically perhaps an option to reverse a delete operation would be good, when you have an opportunity in the future.

Yes, I realised that the roadmap was most likely outdated.  I only found it by chance as a side effect of a Google searh.  The fact that the version references were old gave the clue.

Roadmaps have a habit of popping up quite inappropriately, such is power, and the peril, of the internet. :-)

Have you got any plans to introduce this useful feature?

« on: December 12, 2015, 13:25:58 »
Checking further it seems that there only a few anomalies but they are potentially confusing.

File - Quick Copy     Shift F5     does not appear to have any short-cut in the Windows Explorer style

View Refresh                           F2                should be       F5

Force Refresh (Flush cache)    Shift + F2     should be       Shift + F5

File Tools - Rename                 Shift + F6      should be       F2

Support and Feedback / Some documentation anomalies
« on: December 10, 2015, 17:39:53 »
I was checking through the Documentation pages and in particular, the published keyboard shortcuts for the Explorer version when I found that the keys to refresh, or force refresh, a screen were defined as F2 and Shift F2.

This is clearly incorrect as on the Explorer version the F5 key has that function.  Indeed, on the Explorer version the F2 key is used to rename file/folders.

Investigating further it seems that, in the published documentation, the shortcuts for both the Commander and Explorer versions are identical.

Without actually going through each shortcut, is this actually true?  Certainly given that there is one anomaly, as noted above, it seems possible, if not probable that there are more anomalies.

Clearly not a major issue, more a matter of incorrect documentation.

I am quite happy to investigate further but perhaps you are already aware of this particular issue and have already taken steps to correct it.

Support and Feedback / Button Panel - odd behaviour
« on: December 09, 2015, 15:03:01 »
Noticed an inconsistent behaviour when using the Core Settings option on a Win 10 computer.

I was trying to reduce the number of rows from 4 to 1, basically a simple choice.  After selecting 1 from the drop down list and clicking Save the warning message appeared telling me that the change invoked needed a restart of MC.

Not a problem, simply close down and restart MC.  Result - no change.

The Button Panel still showed four rows.  On the assumption that I may have made a foolish mistake I opened Core Settings and checked.  The change from 4 to 1 had been correctly recorded, so I clicked on Save, closed and then reopened MC.

Result - success.

After observing this odd behaviour, I tried the same operation on another Win 10 computer.  Exactly the same results.  A need to effectively save the change twice before it took effect.

Several further checks seem to confirm that this issue only occurs at the time of the first change to the Button Panel configuration.

All very odd, although the end result is fine. Certainly not  major issue, but potentially confusing when first encountered.

Support and Feedback / Re: Quick Launch Bar icon
« on: December 08, 2015, 16:08:14 »
Yes, as you point out, it was really not to be expected.  I believe, as I noted before that the existence of the Quick Launch bar is simply an artefact of the upgrade process. Had it been a clean install of Win 10 the issue may not have arisen, of course.

Thank you for your patience and courteous responses to my queries -much appreciated.
