Support and Feedback / Re: toggle selections does not invert
« on: October 26, 2017, 18:02:32 »
I've found that if I had only 1 file selected & tried to invert, MC would select everything. (Explorer mode not TC mode).
I reported seeing this 'error' here back in 2013, so Mathias does know about this.

My work-around has been to select 2 files > invert selection > use ctrl to add or subtract the 'extra' file to/from the selection.

pncdaspropagandas I shall now be trying your script, thanks for writing that.  ;)

Thanks Mathias.
I had already tried read-only & it did not work.
It had applied & saved the settings & on restart it reverted (the lines ON had stayed on) but color was back on default white.
When I tried to save the config again it flagged the xml as read-only.

I can't see why it saves & persists with lines & stripes settings etc but not a color change.   ::) ???
I will continue messing about & see if anything changes/presents evidence of why this happens.

-----
Update
I just noticed that if I apply the setting the file updates the timestamp, but (without restarting MC) when I open another file although the setting is maintained (dark stays dark in the same session,) the config options do not reflect a change has been made. (see pic)  Important?
Decided to edit the xml externally

This works....  ;)
Hopefully that will give you a clue as to what is happening.

Hi Mathias
I loaded it into an editor with no errors shown
I tried a browser & it said no style info
I used https://www.xmlvalidation.com  & it said no errors.

Still will not fully load on start...
Strips (Stripes) &/or Lines are the only settings I can get to persist when altering the default.  This implies it is being read & actioned but no color change loaded ???
Are there any dependencies which I might not yet have installed since the clean OS install?  (I've done all the C++ & .Net varieties).

130
Still cannot see an obvious reason for reverting to the original default.
Wondered if MC was reading the .bak but removing it makes no difference.

I tried comparing what was saved yesterday with the backup & also todays save - there doesn't seem to be any difference in the changes I make, they work until MC is restarted

Is there an error in the way the xml is being written causing it to be bypassed on restart?

131
Thanks Mathias  ;)
It is saving.
I checked the datestamp & it shows it was updated yesterday.
Todays cold-boot reverted back to original default.
Have just watched it update the file timestamp again as I re-saved with new default.
As far as I can see AV logs show it is NOT being sandboxed (If it were, would the timestamp change..?)
Weird. ???

This is the updated/saved xml - it looks correct to me & it is working globally :-\

Update
Rebooted & I'm back to original default, also reverts if I restart MC in the same session...
Timestamps update.  I will see if I can see anything else in the logs.

132
OK thanks Mathias.

Need to add that the changed default had reverted to the original one after I rebooted the PC.  Can't see why as the AV etc is supposed to leave MC alone, & the change had been global before the cold boot.  ::)

133
Thanks Mathias

I had been trying to define a new profile as new default, not changing the default.  :-[
I had used the 'new' & set up what I wanted under a new profile name, applied & saved but the config always went back to 'default' at it's initial default settings.

Should we not be able to set & call a new custom profile as a new 'default'?

Nothing I do will make MDV hold a new setting/config.  MC 7.5 b2381, W7x64

E.G.: If I set it to dark theme it's OK for the open file only & it holds only whilst MDV is open for that instance.

If I make/set a new profile for MDV to use a specific theme, when I reopen MDV it has gone back to default.
If I apply new settings with multiple files open I pageup/down & the other files open as default not as the theme I just applied to the open file. The theme change works on the open file only :(
Restarting MC makes no difference.

I had this feature working globally before so am confused.  :-\
Should I try manually editing the .xml?

....Also I noticed that throughout MDV there is a typo - Stripes is entered as 'strips' - not quite the same thing ;)

I had a couple of rar sets that I tested using sfv that had been produced for the sets.
I had some corrupt rar segments but could substitute any blank file with a name change to get errors.

However I just wiped my OS as I had an ongoing (unfixable) issue with IE 11 &  WinUpdates.  So as I hadn't had a clean install for 3+yrs thought that I'd re-install & change things...
So now things are a bit smoother & the Winupdates are working correctly again.  Hopefully any little corruptions will now be avoided & I'll be certain it isn't only M$ related nonsense.

I deleted the old rar-sets so can't re-check but have found a different 'error'  - nothing I do will make MDV hold it's settings/config.  (This may need it own thread...)

I set it to dark theme, & I set a new profile to use that but either way when I reopen it it has gone back to default.
If I apply the settings with multiple files open I pageup/down & the other files open as default not as the dark theme I just applied :(  Restarting MC makes no difference.

@AlanJB .sfv -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_file_verification

Sorry Mathias somehow I put 'part' twice... should have been Multi-Part fileset I have my own faulty output display!!!

This was a set of .rars with an SFV for integrity checking.
I have played around deleting & adding files & MC checks the CRC correctly giving same results as winrar but not on the status column output.  The displayed status varies a lot when more than 2 faulty CRCs are found.
Results are different with damaged or missing files.

See attached - I cannot see how the counts compare to the outputs.

Support and Feedback / SFV status display inaccurate
« on: September 23, 2017, 10:30:00 »
Noticed a strange status output error using the sfv checker on W7x64 MC 7.5 b2381

With a multi-part part fileset MC shows 3 files failed asks del/ren/ignore, but then lists 4 items to del.  4 items are shown as failed when looking at the processed item list.
I tried with 1, 2 & 4 bad parts & so far only with more than 2 bad files does this inaccuracy in counter display occur:-
1 bad file shows 1 failed;
2 bad files shows 2 failed;
3 bad files shows 2 failed;
3 bad files shows 5 failed
4 bad files shows 3 failed.

Number of items to process (in dialog for del etc) is always correct tho.

If I delete bad parts I see MC hang completion status @ 90+%.  It has finished the routine, showing files missing & is ready to rescan.
Just an odd output under the status column.   ???

Thanks for all the work you do on MC, couldn't live without it now :D

Dont forgot the RegEx checkbox if you are using regex there

:)  Yes I later noticed that in the screenshot I hadn't ticked the box, but it was only for that pic I'd omitted it.
Normally I remember it needs doing  ;D

Hi Jungle - that is what I expected to happen but I got extra " added when I submitted the string to the dialog.
Your solution does show me where I was 'wrong'.  Normally a <space> needs to have " ", so I added them, giving me the result in the attached jpg.
However had I not manually typed in the string in the ... form, MR would have given me the format you have that works. I didn't expect that format could work given the restraints of the " "s.  Assumed it would try a literal " ($1)" as the name string.    :-[ :-\

Hi AJB - you would be right about the escapes but \ will not enter the equation as a character that the rename form allows for output.  (Cannot output a regex from a regex, does that ever work in the ancient mists of Perl?)
I guess you were thinking something like (?:what|the|hell) :)
In the case of the MultiRename dialog you will see the format can be only:-  regex in|acceptable folder-file name out
MR is a very useful tool for renaming, & I use it quite a bit in my MC toy-box.  ;)

So I guess that is panic over!   :D

Hi AJB, the regex finds any 4 digit value starting with 19 (a year in this case).
If that is found the 1st instance is called to be renamed with ()s;  1923 = (1923)
(&The | is from the Rename dialog text entry field.   :P :))

Hi Mathias, yep \ is normally used but I can't pass that to the output field.
[& I also discovered that with the width of the rename window there is no horizontal scrolling for loooooong names, vertical scrolling is OK for multiple rename entries over-filling the window whitespace.]
The issue is with MR adding """s to a <space> which is normally OK e.g. _|" ", but with a regex it adds several automatically & I cannot edit it out as it won't let me...  ::) ???

Using the rename dialog I had some issues adding a space to a regex with a selection group.   I had a regex for bracketing dates, (19[0-9][0-9])|($1) & I wanted to add a space but "s are added in a strange way e.g.

(19[0-9][0-9])| ($1)

becomes

(19[0-9][0-9])|" "($1)"

Manual adjustment via ... dialog won't persist.   ???

OK thanks Mathias.
I will see if toggling autoresize helps.  Had thought that might override the 'saved' layout.

Was it ever possible to save the column size in the rename dialog?  It will save dimensions when being resized but always shrinks columns far left regardless of size/position on close :(

Unfortunately those few pixels make a lot of difference with some of my long filenames...
Isn't saving a default supposed to be a persistent setting?
The window position & size is persistent between closing down/reboot, as are my open tabs.  But not my column width settings  :-\

Here's the same window opened after clean boot (so settings should be saved)  'whitespace' appeared on some tabs columns.  I have yet to discern a fixed pattern to this behavior, it isn't always the same tabs & sometimes they are all OK.   :o ::)

I can see this isn't the end of the world but it is curious & maybe a symptom of something you &/or I need to look at.
Thanks for your time Mathias ;)

Thanks Mathias, these are 2 pics of MC after startup (+cold boot), #1 is how it loaded, #2 is how it is once I rmb & 'restore'.
This time it isn't much but it is still something I don't think should occur + I haven't resized the main window.

For the rename dialog - the pics in the post above show that the column width divider goes far left as default, previously it would be more like a 50/50 split between the old & new name fields.  Now I have a big whitespace field that is irritating for long name view.

I wonder if it is related to the VGA driver, I know sometimes a 'tweak' by the manufacturer in there can be a root cause of dialog draw issues.
I updated that recently, now using nvda 382.53-desktop-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.

Thanks for reply Mathias.
Hmmm well I previously had a rename dialog which would make some allowance for name string length when it opened....it always seemed to anyway.
These 2 pics show what I have now vs what I *remember* having before.  One squashed to left + one as I expect it to be.

Pic 3 - This is the setting for my columns, I made it global default once I had my widths set.  ('Details' view is my default option.)
I have found in the past that columns would resize, (ref - http://forum.multicommander.com/forum/index.php/topic,1919.msg7298.html#msg7298) this is the first time I've had it really scrambled & sometimes adding whitespace on the right squashing the other columns randomly.

I have noticed that since 7.3 bd2532 I need to use the 'restore columns' command after every reboot & in most/all tabs.
Additionally the mass-rename dialog will not save its' state.
This is a bit annoying for long names as it shifts the column width back to the left (see pic) & shrinks the whole dialog to a default size window everytime I re-open it.  ::)

Just me?

AI would be nice :)
I liked the idea as a starting point.
Your Audio & Music filters do have differences (but clashes are inevitable) so I modified the basic filters to track down music or audio.  I just alter names with something to show if non-music (with mass rename a pattern is easy to introduce).  Then I add that to my filter.

I think setting name patterns matching filters is a good use of MultiScript, when/if you always have a fixed set of categories or date-stamps to select.  I use that method for sorting & cataloging images.  Not a huge leap to apply that to audio categories if required.

Hi Mathias, I liked your choice of both - as Audio & Music are both useful categories.
eg:- if you had files of audio-books & music Audio could allow files non-music audio to be separated from Music audio.
Just a thought.  ;)
