Title: What do *YOU* want to be added to Multi Commander ?
Post by: Mathias (Author) on March 02, 2015, 18:48:22
Okey Everybody.. Time to get your requests seen.

What are the top thing missing from Multi Commander for you.
If you could choose one (1) thing to be added to Multi Commander what would that be ?
(Only say one (1) thing. The top most thing you want..  For a list of items drop an entire new message about that..)

Sorry Invalid answer :)
As I said..

I do not want a list of items. If you got a list post an own message with them, (As you already done) Here I want to know what the number one thing people want, if they only can have 1 thing what is at the top that list. But looks like most people don't want anything added.. only 3 replays.  So I might just do the features I want myself then, :)

My fault for not reading properly!

My needs from a FileMngr are very simple not much else is required by me other than those already stated. But As I have to choose one that would benefit others as well, then I'd pick Complete Theming/Skinning ability.

EDIT: Unless Portable File Association is currently NOT part of MC, then that first before Theming.

No, you do not have to choose one that would benefit other. It can be any thing that would make something work better for you.

Oh ok, well, I suppose my first choice would be the Option to Open New Tab when clicking Drives and Bookmarks (nothing else) whether they be Buttons, shortcuts or anything else that would otherwise open any drive or bmk. I know you have said this can be done with scripts, but I think I'll have a hard time with that! Knowing where to start is the problem, though if you're dead against it I'll have to give it a go, lol. Anyway, that's probably my first choice for improving navigation, at least for me personally.

3 replies too few? Is 4 replies enough? :)

Just kidding. It'sprobably because MC is so feature rich as it is.
If I had to choose a feature, I'd go with what @Jungle said, a flat view of the file list.

Hello Mathias,

A script function to be able to download files from the internet using the HTTP, HTTPS or FTP protocol.

Regards.
Since MC already had the ability to download from http/https (Download new version and version info) it was an easy addition to allow script to use that. So in latest beta there is now a script function named NetWGet(..)
(FTP is already there. but it is not as easy as a one line command)

Hello

I would like a command line parameter in the MC's setup program to set default options.

Implementation example:
On computer A:
- I export my settings from MC,
- the file "MultiCommander_ConfigBackup.zip" is created.
On computer B:
- I want to install MC on computer B,
- I execute this command:
Code: [Select]
setup.exe /default-settings:MultiCommander_ConfigBackup.zip- I launch MC and I have my settings applied on computer B.

I was thinking about small update for MultiRename Tool, to use external txt file with written words/letters to replace automaticaly.
All words/letters should be separate by "|" and words to replace in two rows. For example we can create by ourselfs some templates like:

faet.|taht|cant|dont
feat.|that|can't|don't

second example to remove diacritic letters (Polish):

ą|ę|ó|ś|ł|ż|ź|ć|ń
a|e|o|s|l|z|z|c|n

Such templates could by placed in config folder and load automaticaly with  MultiRename start - it could be our decision which templates load.

There are more then 200+ exif tags. MC can't support all. There are special tools for that that will do that better.
But if you list what exif that are important that are missing they might be added.

I found this very interesting and useful so it have been added.

In the version this should work.
Code: [Select]
MultiCommander_x64_(5.1.0.19xx).exe /CONFIG=MC_ConfigBackup.zip

Summary of requests so for

Requests
1) A script function to be able to download files from the internet using the HTTP, HTTPS or FTP protocol.
2) Multiple requests for Branch (flat) view - show all files in the current folder and all subfolders in a single file panel.
3) Restore backup on install with installer.
4) MultiRename - | separated list with texts to replace
5) Undelete / recover files
6) More EXIF Columns

Comments..
1) This is added in the MC 5.1 ( MultiScript function : NetWGet(..) )
2) Investigating and prototyping has started. But require lots of work. Might be ready for the summer or after the summer
3) Added for MC 5.1 release
4) Investigating and something like this will be added in future release.
5) Sorry. This is to complex. Adding something like that would require to much time. There are lots of 3d party tools for that, that will do a much better job.
6) There are over 200+ exif properties. MC will not support all of them. There are dedicated tools for handling exif that will do a better job.
But give me list of the most important EXIF properties that are missing and I can add them.

I have 2 main issues: -
1- undo (e.g.<ctrl>+z) for accidental clicks like deletion :P
2- Script debugger tool more 'finished'.

#1 is my choice for a feature as I am guessing you will already have a plan to increase or alter debugger functionality.

I realize the undo function would be complex to implement, maybe instead it would be possible to call the last command/process line(s) from the logfile to the clipboard/a textview window.  I.e. A quick key combo or button shortcut to bring up a dialog of the last few processes with copyable paths+filenames.
This latter could be useful in a variety of situations.

Perhaps a MCscript function to select lines of the log & then output to text file or MDViewer (as defined within the script) would address this?
This could also possibly allow selecting of: -
a specific number of lines, (eg last 5 lines chronologically)
a time range,
a file type,
an operation type etc etc
 - allowing a quick way of checking things like what was deleted, which operations occurred on a specific file type in x hrs etc.
This could be potentially useful in a lot of environments.

I can of course open the log window & copy text out to search etc but integrating the search function to the log window or allowing me to script specific searches would be fun :D

Hi,
first of all, a big thank you for your great work!
My first thing would be an internal, docked file viewer.Let me explain it:
If you navigate to a list of files there is a third window ( let it be at the bottom ) which is in sync with the content of the file. So you can move quickly through a list of "txt"-files and scan for some data.
This feature would also be very nice when I go though the tree with the hotkeys. After each key pressed the content of the folder is automatically refreshed. ( or is this already possible, I haven't found it yet? I always have to press "Return".
Thank you!
Frank

Hi,

Can you add these two features?

1. To default the sorting (e.g. by date) when opening a new tab (whatever path)
2. To default path when creating new tab by double clicking on empty tab

Many thanks!

I need standard Windows copy as an option.

MC is great, has much more grace than TC and is more user friendly. But file copy suffers. I have made some tests on my laptop with hdd:
- windows copy of 3GB file: 1:08 (average for three copy operations)
- MC copy of the same file: 1:25 (average for three copy operations)
Result for MC is the best result I could achieve messing with copy config (I have tried 7 different configurations and "Normal,Same disk" with default buffer settings was fastest).
I have also desktop pc with ssd. I did not make exact measurements, but feeling is the same - windows copy is faster.

Just to let everyone know, MC support tweaking of ALL the option that Windows provide for reading/writing data.
But speed depends on a lot of things. And it is very hard to measure correct because windows to a lot of caching and buffering on it own that messes with timing. Eg when cache gets full everything stops until it is flushed and so on.
And sometimes the speed that windows show is a lie, is say it is done when data has just reached the cache of the target. not when the data is actually written.
For modern drives and modern hardware you get fastest speed bypassing cache, and with a r/w chunk size of 1mb. But it depends on hardware.
