Thanks, I could manage the update.

MC now behaves differently, but still doesn't work.

I have assigned "click" to "context menu" and "click and hold" to "toggle".

Now the behaviour is not always the same.

Sometimes (rarely), "click and hold" really select a file, but only if no other file has been selected already.

Most of the time, it shows the context menu (plus, the selected file is checkmarked, but as soon as I close the context menu, the checkmark is gone).

Sometimes, click an hold doesn not show the context menu (which would be the right thing), and shows a checkmark immediately after the mouse-down event; but as soon as I release the mouse button, the checkmark is gone.

BTW, something off-topic, but maybe of interest to you: The Multi-Update seems to have a small glitch. Nothing serious, but it can be confusing:

I had enabled "update for beta versions" and then used Help/Check for Updates to initiate the update. MC was shut down (as expected), but then, the Updater complained that MC would still be running. I checked using Process Explorer, but no MC process, so I told the Updater to go on. It went through the update without error message, but then finished without offering to start MC. When I started MC manually, I still had the old version. I then did exactly the same procedure again, and now it worked and I got the update.

But you can always backup config from the  "Menu > Help > Backup / Restore" to be sure

OK, backup done. Where can I get the Beta? The download page http://multicommander.com/downloads shows only the last stable version from 1st of February.

try the latest beta.. some combination should work better now.

Will installing the latest beta automatically take over my old configuration? I have done a lot of configuration/customization, and would hate to have to do it all over.

I finally found a workaround:

I have associated the "toggle" action to "click and hold" of the MIDDLE mouse button, and this works well. For the record, my settings are now:

Left Click : Open folder
Left Doubleclick : Open folder/execute file
Left Click and Hold : Rename
Right Click : Shell context menu
Middle Click and hold : Toggle

I can't assign toggle to only "Middle Click", because this already executes the command "save clipboard content into file", but selecting via click and hold is just fine for me.

(Don't understand how people can run with single click active..  accentually click a file and it will launch. )

One can get used to it. With Windows Explorer, it practically doesn't occur that I launch something by mistake.  Actually, I am a slow clicker, and I usually set the maximum allowed click time to a higher value, to recognize my double clicks, so at least for me, single-click to launch works well.

But not sure. If I get some time over I will check it again. But if something breaks commander style it will not be changed. CommanderStyle setup is first priority.

Makes sense to me too!

Thanks anyway.

I *do*have the checkboxes. This is not the problem. They just don't behave in the expected way. For example, when I click on a checkbox in front of a filename of an excel file, Excel is started. Of course, the checkbox gets a checkmark too (in this respect, it selects correctly), but I don't want to have the associated program to be launched.  I only want the checkmark to be set (or removed), without a program being started.

Thank you for the explanation. I'm not all too happy with the solution, because double-click for the context menu is a bit counter intuitive....

In Windows Explorer, it can be configured, that single-clicking on the small square to the left of the filename would toggle the selection, while single-clicking on the filename would open/run the file. This is pretty convenient, because it's like eating the cake and keeping it. Would it be possible to implement something similar to Multi Commander?

Support and Feedback / Can not "click and hold" to toggle selection
« on: February 23, 2015, 17:40:02 »
I'm looking for a way to select/deselect a file in the explorer pane. I have configured my left mouse button to open/execute the file, because this is what I am doing most of the time, but sometimes I just want to select or deselect a file, without doing anything else.

I have configured my mouse to associate "click and hold" for the right mouse button, with "toggle selection". However, when I click and hold the mouse - even for more than one second - it always opens the context menu instead. What am I doing wrong?

See the attached screenshot for my current settings.

Support and Feedback / Re: File coloring does not work

Maybe I found the culprit. I ran into this situation again, and it occured after I had modified settings in the "Path field" section of the colour configuration. Basically, I switched from "windows colours" to "custom colours" and applied it to the gradient settings. I played around with various settings, and then suddenly noticed that file coloring was gone. After restaring MC, it was back again.

Now, when thinking of it, there was one more strange issue with this:

During the time where file coloring was not working, the explorer context menu was also incomplete. I am using several add ons, which hook into the context menu, and at least one of them was gone: It was the addon for the tool kdiff3 (http://kdiff3.sourceforge.net/). I first thought that there is a problem with my kdiff3 installation, but after starting a fresh copy of multi commander, the usual context menu was back again.

I think there were a few more items missing in the context menu at this time, because it looked somewhat shorter, but at that time I was only interested in kdiff3, and I didn't pay attention to the others.

Yes, this was applied, but I still did not get any colour.
However, I could solve the problem by myself: I simply quit Multi Commander and started it again, and everything is fine now. Perhaps it is a bug? I modified a few color settings before, and then reverted them to the original value. Maybe one of those settings was temporarily "killing" the file coloring. I tried to reproduce it, but with no success :-(

I have set the following options in my explorer panel colour settings:

- highlight the background on panel in focus
- use file specified background colors
- use folder specified background colors
- different colors for files with system/hidden attributes
- rule based coloring for files and folders

Clicking on the file coloring icon shows that the default coloring profile is enabled, and "apply file coloring" has a checkmark. Still, I don't get any file coloring, even after clicking on "Refresh....".

Are there other options I need to activate for enabling file coloring?

Yes you can can change shortcut key

Menu > Configuration > Keyboard customization

You find Quickpath #1, #2 and so on there.  you can change them to Shift+Ctrl+1 , and so on..

Thanks, this is great! BTW, I found also another approach which gets the job done: Using the button editor, I changed the definition of some unused buttons to execute the command Quickpath #1 etc., and this works well too.

I'm one step further: I got the pop up window to work. The trick is to move the mouse to the middle of the "multi commander" window, and then invoke the "Favorites" window using the hotkey which you have suggested, Alt-Backspace. I think the problem with the Favorites windows is that it is placed just centered on top of the main window, i.e. away from the star button. Since I have "autoraise" and "focus follows mouse" enabled (I don't switch windows by clicking into them, but by moving the mouse over the window which should receive the focus), the main window gets the focus again, before the mouse has a chance to reach the pop-up. I was lucky that the pop-up was a modal window! The real cause of the problem seems to be therefore, that the pop up window doesn't use the property "always in foreground", and hence can be hidden again.

Now there is one more problem left: I'm using the key combination Control-DIGIT to switch between virtual desktops. Is there a way to assign different key combinations to the favorites, for example Control-Shift-DIGIT?

The problem is: How can I right-click on an item, when I am not allowed to move the mouse? As I said, the favorites windows disappears immediately as soon as I move the mouse.

How can I set a Quick Path?

I clicked on the "star" icon, and then a window pops up saying "Favorites". This pop up window disappears immediately, as soon as I move the mouse. As long as I don't move the mouse, I can use the cursor keys to one of 10 possible QuickPath entries, but I don't see any explanations on how I actually can enter a path.

I didn't find this explained in the docs either. For example, the Content Index (http://multicommander.com/docs/index) doesn't even mention the Quick Path feature.....
