Reset File Type Setup
« on: November 27, 2020, 06:30:59 »
Hello all.
Hope you are safe and sane wherever you are ...
I love MC.
However, before you know it, you can mess it up with settings!
It is best if a beginner just stay out of there!
It started with just wanting Notepad to open a text file.  A certain graphics program, Then something else ...
Now, nothing is working.  I starts up different apps, jumps around in the directory, etc.
My bad ...
What is the best way to fix this?
I know I can reload the program, but I have a lot of customizing done in the tools bars, button bars. etc, and would rather not do that.
If I have to install again, so be it.
I did a Reset in File Type Setup.  Didn't help.
Suggestions, questions for me, etc?
Thanks
Bob

type ":goconfig" in command line field to go to configuration location
delete "FileTypes.xml"
Restart MC

If you want to change the DEFAULT behaviour of that viewer or editor to use. the change the "DEFAULT" option.

Thanks for getting back with me.
MC is amazing!  You can get pretty deep real fast and mess things up!
That is on me ... Love MC.
OK, I deleted FIleTypes.xml.
My problem is when I click a file.
It seems random, but I can't be sure.
It seems to take me to various places.
If I am clicking a .pdf file, it takes me to C:\User\UserName.
Same with .jpg, docx, etc.
What I want is to be able to double click a text file and have it open in the editor of my choice.
Or a .jpg and open a graphics program.
Somewhere I got this all messed up and am just about to the reload the whole program.
Really don't want to as I have buttons, shortcuts, etc. all set up.
Some thoughts on where I should be checking and changing?
Thanks for listening.
Bob

That sounds very strange and unclear of what actually happens.

Then you might have done some editing to the Run/Open section in filetype setup maybe.
Normally when you double click on a file. then it is the "Run/Open" action that is run. So you then need to configure the editor there.
If you open the edit via the "Edit" command.. then you configure it in "Editors" tab in FileType Setup

I restored a previous backup of configs and things are better now.
I will do more backups and study what I am changing before I do it.
Thanks for your help.
We are good for now!
