Custom column support

Hello,
is it possible to define a new column and add it to layout.
I would like to have a separate column which would display a fraction of file name and support sorting?

An example
File name                   Owner
File1 Owner:Peter      Peter
File1 Owner:John      Jack
File1 Owner:Mick       Mick
