invalid modules/extensions
« on: February 26, 2026, 17:45:12 »
I'm getting this attached error message as MC starts. But there's no hint at how to troubleshoot it. Once the program starts, the application log says multiple extensions initialized (15) and then "initialization completed" followed by "Application ready!" and checking for new version (none found).

I've restarted many times this morning trying to resolve some minor questions about the program's behavior. But I figured it would be best to resolve this one and maybe the other problems will disappear.

So how to I figure out what is going on here?

Many many thanks for any guidance,
JeanneMarie
MC ver. 15.8 build 3135

Some of the modules did not get updated correct during update for some reason (something blocked them from being replaced), You can start MultiUpdate program manually and in setting select force update.. or you can download and reinstall.

In the AppLog (Ctrl+L in the app to view it) It should say what modules it fails to load if you want to know exactly what module that is not loaded

As I wrote, the application log indicated about 15 extensions initialized and the further messages were initialization complete and application ready. No errors/problems indicated at all. I was wondering about simply reinstalling and appreciated your mentioning that. All is well after a re-install.

In fact, better:  Before, while FTP appeared to be available, clicking on it just kept returning me to the root of Drive C. So it must be one of those that never really initialized.

So the application log is incorrectly reporting initializations--at least after an update. (By the way, if it might matter, I am using the Windows compatibility view.)

Unrelated: I also discovered that desktop shortcuts to MC may not work as desired. Post-update, I kept altering my display but MC didn't seem to remember anything on exit. When I unintentionally started the program from the Win Start Menu (poof!), everything was as I had previously configured it. Lesson learned. It's not hugely important, but worth noting that a new shortcut may be in order after any changes.

Thanks for so many wonderful features, altho I will never use many. I've found it very difficult to adjust to MC but keep returning to try because of all the frustrations that Win File Explorer produces and you are very familiar with. For example, I don't know when you added highlighting all parent folders in the tree--in color, no less!--but I just about cried with joy when that showed up. That alone means I will not easily give up on MC again.

But BTW, could you not update this document once a year or so and make it easier to find:
http://multicommander.com/files/MultiCommander_Doc.pdf
?
If I'd found this a few years ago, I would have stuck with MC much more and told more of my friends about it.

The log report what module fails unless log settings been change so it does not report it. (core settings.)

Anyway

I don't understand the issue with shortcut and what MC did not remember ? check the source of the shortcut. they might point to two different installs.
Highlist in folder tree.. was added end of 2024

The documentation web page is rebuilt and the pdf create script does not work anymore. It has to be rebuilt and I have not had time.

Alas, I can't be very helpful about conditions before yesterday's re-install. I had had MC on my computer for quite a while, but wasn't using it. It seems that I re-installed it last in early 2025 on my new machine, but I still didn't use it much. I can't even tell you how the desktop shortcut got created. Was it created as part of the installation of 2025? or did I later create it via Windows? Unknown. But clearly, MC couldn't remember-on-exit the layout settings (display drive E:\, display tree, remember open path, remember the folder in focus) after the upgrade. It also couldn't access FTP altho an icon was displayed.

To the best of my understanding--and I would never suggest you rely on this because I was barely using the program--it seems that my troubles only started with an upgrade of that last installation a couple of days ago. Certainly that is when the error message (image in my original post) began appearing on startup with no hint on what to do about it. I'm 100% certain of that.

I'm not entirely sure I understand about what the log report does and does not contain. But I can assure you that I never changed any core setting ever. I never got that far in mastering MC; configuring the Explorer Panel Settings was challenge enough. And post-upgrade, the log did not report any initialization failure. I checked carefully.

RE the PDF: It is just easier to master something quite new with print or its modern equivalent of PDF. It does seem to me that that the program is imitating the Windows look & feel better than when I first installed in 2017, and I'm not here to endorse Microsoft's product. But MC is robust enough to be very forbidding to the first-time user who appreciates its obvious abilities but will never use all of its features and just needs to get on with managing her files and move on. So whenever I can use a Win keyboard shortcut, I'm happy. I mention this only to reinforce that the PDF is very helpful with getting one's arms around pretty basic things like this.

Please don't feel obliged to continue this unless I can offer real info. For me, there are no open issues/problems and I can't access or reproduce any history here.
