Jungle: with all due respect, if I understand right what you mean by wildcard I would like to strongly disagree: wildcard search was available before too, and I never used it, but the way it's now available is peeeeeeeeeeeerfeeect! No extra typing, just enter a folder and start quick typing filename and i'm on it instantly. No search command, no wildcard symbols, just works automagically.

Support and Feedback / Re: selection reset on folder change?
« on: March 19, 2012, 11:33:25 »
that's fantastic news about the quicksearch! Thank you so much!
About multi column I can only assume it's a tough feature to implement: a couple of years ago I was working as a writer for a Linux magazine and since I'm big into productivity i wrote some articles about file managers and did an interview with the Krusader team, and I'm proud to say in the process suggested some features which I think added a lot, but multi view even many years later I have not seen to have been added though there too many people were requesting it, so I can only assume it's a non-standard or tough thing to implement in the software. Still, it would be oh so very great to have it! In the case of those folders with many files it uses in a useful way a lot of the otherwise wasted screen space thus helping with a quick overview of where you are and what you're doing there, not to mention the increase in navigation speed as you go from one dimenion up-down to 2 dimenional movement.

Thank you very much! Yet another great feature/fix added so very fast! With that and the filter reset now the only thing missing from MC being the top file manager I've ever used is multi column and inside quicksearch... i'm amazed how every month it gets better! Totally the best software discovery of 2011 & 2012!

Hey, thank you so much! not just for doing it, but also for explaining it here. I saw it in the new features but then spent like 20 minutes searching for it eveerywhere I could think of and couldn't find it. It turns out from other tries I had assume 'module specific command' is always a blank field so I kept skipping it. Thank you so much! finally the left and right keys are doing something very useful! Thank you!

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Re: not opening all selected
« on: March 07, 2012, 14:03:26 »
Great points! I just tried out it in windows explorer just to check. It is similar, but at the same time very different. It is true that selecting multiple images and hitting enter will open for me multiple instances of my image viewer, but, there's a crucial difference. Windows explorer is built and optimized for (to me slow moving/not so efficient) clicking people. Due to this clicking interface yes, you can select mutliples files, but only by holding ctrl & then clicking at different positions in the 2d plane. That makes it less of a problem, and to make it a complete non-problem whenever you manually move focus of a file with arrow keys the selection resets (often resets would also get rid of the problem in MC). In explorer there is no way to select a file and then use the arrow keys to move past a couple and then select another one.

Howeeever, MC is by design a tool oriented for more keyboard and shortcut use. I never use the mouse to jump around files in MC, always the keyboard. As such it is very natural to select, move move, select, move, select... and so on. So in explorer I would always be able to do what I was doing there with no problem because on my single click I would have already deselected. (if i were an explorer keyboard user (less of them) by moving away, and if i were a typical mouse user by clicking).

That's why I think in this instance MC should behave differently than Explorer because it's a very different beast, one which is meant for keyboard use, and further more as you brilliantly pointed out on the splash screen, it's a tool for professionals, eg people who care (a lot) about productivity and see the huge advantage of a second here and there for activities done hundreds of times per day every day of the year for whole careers.

The entire "Overwrite" dialog is on my list of thinks that need a complete redesign. Because if I add all the options one can have there you end up with 15-20 buttons. and that is UI hell. That dialog need to be smarter some way.
Hey. I just had an idea! User responsivity and smaller interface! I know what you're talking about as in TC there's some "more" options. On one hand it's nice that you have more options, on the other it happens that sometimes exactly the buttons I need are in the more section thus requiring more clicks. So how about having a fixed + more section, but with the fixed section responding to the individual user. So whenever a button gets used by a particular user it's counter gets incremented. And only the top 5 buttons appear the others beign hidden behind the "more" (two arrows or something) button. I don't remember seeing this anywhere before but I think it may be priceless. It would mean that for example pretty soon, less than a week of use my very own MC would only have 2 buttons: overwrite all, auto rename all :D

Feature Requests and Suggestions / not opening all selected
« on: March 07, 2012, 10:20:08 »
I've been meaning to ask about this one for a while, but figured it can wait, but now I have a, I hope, more convincing example that will hopefully help me argue that it does not make intuitive sense or user friendliness that the enter key on a file opens not just the focused file but all the selected files:
I was emptying my photo camera and was sorting the images and in the process of moving and sorting I hit enter to check one of the new files. Little did I know this would open not just the image I wanted but hundreds more (I dread to think what would have happened had i been working not with images but videos or audio files). This happened like 20 minutes ago. It totally froze my (rather powerful) desktop but since I was afraid of losing some important data I figured I'd wait. Since then I ate, and am writing this on my laptop. I think I'll wait a while more hoping not to lose data, but in the end I might have to force reboot via hardware. Something milder than this has happened to me before. I admit it may be argued it's my fault, that I'm not yet used to persistent selections, but even without them I would like to humbly argue that it makes more sense to open only the current file on 'Enter', and that for those needing to individually open tens of instances of windows with different files there's always right clicking and 'Open all'.

With respect,
Void

Feature Requests and Suggestions / replace all & auto rename all
« on: March 07, 2012, 09:48:29 »
Hi. Two productivity suggestions that I think would be very cool:
1) a quick shortcut to replace all files. Example: i just downsampled a lot of images and now I want to overwrite them. I do F6, Enter, and then I get the overwrite question. Would be great if every one of those buttons would have a little hotkey. For example I'd do "F6, Enter, (alt?)l" sequence very fast knowing that would quickly select replace-all. Since this is done often I think this would speed up the workflow in MC.
2) one button that I think is missing there is Auto-rename and Auto Rename All. In cases like this with tens of files in case you know they just all happened to have been numbered in a generic way like 1, 2, 3, 4, .... by the camera it would be nice to have the option to autorename them with one click. For example then if there are two 1 images the new one would become 1a or something like that

Oh, and that reminds me, maybe it's changed since then, but would also be nice to have an all as administrator in case it's needed. I haven't needed this recently so maybe the issue is gone but I remember a while ago I was deleting stuff from a mobile hdd and for every single file it would ask me if I want to do it as administrator and go into that authorization mode.

Thank you so very much! Hope I'm not annoying you with all these suggestions. Sure, it would be helpful to me, but also in the end it will help make MC into even better with small tweaks, so I hope you won't get upset at me.

I understand what you're saying. Anyway, the style is indeed not as important as the functionality.

38
Aaa, now I get it. That and the to me not obvious way to set the background color had confused me. Thank you very much! If I could make a suggestion it would be nice to have a checkbox to have files and folders behave in the same way so you only have to set the different states and colors for one, or lacking that a quick way to copy all the settings from one to the other.
Thank you so much for being so responsive. MC is becoming better every week! Thank you!!!

Awesome! thank you very much! Me & my wife will be very happy about this one! :D

hey, thank you. I couldn't find there to set a focused color background change, am I missing something? Would still be nice to have a bolded stroke around the currently focused file. Another idea would be how about having a black rectangle near it on the (center or both) panel border to make it clear that's where you're focused now. Also the ability to maybe have a focused font would be nice, like say when you have it selected it goes a little bit bold. For an even more dynamic visual effect the current file could have a 20% fade of color say into white and back, all very slowly, say looping in 5 seconds. Just some humble proposals to make the focused file more obvious.

Feature Requests and Suggestions / current file: marking and size
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:59:51 »
Hi. It seems to me that it's a bit hard sometimes to instantly realize the current file/where the current operation will act. Because of that I would suggest instead of a thin line that stands between two files some kind of background or file highlithing/bolding/... The line is quite thin, and it often takes a whole second to realize where it is and weather it refers to the previous or next file, sometimes I only notice it after moving it up and down.  Also about the current file I think always the current file should have some info displayed about it in the status bar. In particular I care about the file size and I think that is always relevant about the current file. Right now to find out the size of a file in a folder i have to navigate to it, select it, and then unselect it, and then do this  again for the next file and so on. Yes, I use MC in a sort of minimal mode with only file & extension columns to avoid visual clutter and since I only rarely need file sizes... but when needed I think this would be a fast and elegant way to show it. I see there would be plenty of space for this to be added to the status line by the usual (not so useful) 0 files and 0 folders selected text, even if both are kept, though possibly it would make sense to switch between these two modes: when you have nothing selected that line would show info about he current file, and when you had files selected it would switch back to what is showing now: the size and consistency of the selection.
Respectfully & thankfully,

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Left & Right arrows navigation
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:45:48 »
A few days ago I excitedly showed my discovery of MultiCommander to my programmer wife and tried to convinced her that we should do a full switch: she used it for a few features but said she can't live without the left-right keys and went back to our previous file manager. I'm telling this story as an illustration of what I felt too, so I would like to humbly and respectfully ask if it would be possible to have the left & right arrow keys behave like home & end. I think this behavior makes a lot fo sense: your hand is always on the up-down keys anyway and it's a waste to have the neighbouring left-right do nothing, and it makes a lot of sense to have them do the one thing that would take a lot of key strokes/pressing to do otherwise: navigated to the top and bottom of the list of files.

Thank you very much for all the great things you're doing and your patience and help with us!

Feature Requests and Suggestions / filtering + folders
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:40:36 »
One thing I found rather confusing and wanted to ask for a tweak on is the quick filter. It's a brilliant idea, but because of one little option I find it difficult and don't use it enough: let's say i have folders with many .jpg files. I want to filter *.jpg. The confusing thing is that if I go one level up to go into another folder of images I don't see the folders. I think the filder should be set so that folders can be set to be always visible. They are the containers in which we navigate in and thus making them disappear takes us out of context. Because of this I often use the search... but that's not so optimal so thought I'd mention this. I think maybe there could be a check box in the config near the filter to toggle the visibility of folders.

Feature Requests and Suggestions / midfilenamequick search
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:36:43 »
It would be awesome if there was an option to set the quicksearch to work inside filenames, not only with the first letters. So for example I would like to type "pho..." and be jumped to the folder "Interesting Photos". This is handy as sometimes in big folders with many files I quickly remember for example in a book list the author name, instead of the book name and I'd like to be on the file even if the author comes after the book name. Thank you so very much!

PS: the new beta is brilliant and already has shockingly many new features and fixes! Awesoooooooomee!!!

Feature Requests and Suggestions / hot paths drag&drop sorting
« on: February 24, 2012, 16:52:13 »
Would be cool if that list of hot paths that drops on right clicking the current path had it's individual lines movable with the mouse. So for example now I've realized that I've got ctrl+1 occupied with something not quite as important as a new folder I want to add, and if that were possible I could just opene the list, move the current path to the desired position and then add there another one.

« on: February 24, 2012, 16:26:43 »
Thank you very much! I agree it's something unique that I haven't seen in any other similar program... I'm just afraid this may be one of those 'with great power comes great responsibility' things as when I navigate quickly I don't trust myself to remember an earlier selection that may be pages/scrolling down (especially until the multi column feature).

Support and Feedback / selected file size units

I've found where to change the free space and the file size to Gb & Mb, but I can't find a place to change the unit of measure for when i select say 10 files in a row. For me it's K. Thank you! (for everything, and your patience and help with a noob)

Support and Feedback / address-standard-drives... section
« on: February 24, 2012, 09:58:07 »
Is there a way to make the top section disappear? It seems redundant to me and just taking up screen space. The drives are already shown in each panel, the address also. It looks like it can be dragged off with a mouse, but to me it isn't reacting that way.  (v.2.0.0)
