Tips and Tricks / CMD console mod (Freeware)
« on: June 16, 2018, 11:34:54 »
I found a good cmd.exe console mod here - http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Freeware/ColorConsole
It has color profiles, tabs, handy tree navigation, can save favorite commands etc & the exe can be dropped on MCs top bar.

The home page has a number of interesting small freeware progs - http://www.softwareok.de/?  including a 4 pane WinExplorer mod http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Freeware/Q-Dir

Support and Feedback / Re: External Refresh issue
« on: May 28, 2018, 10:51:35 »
I posted this in another thread but may be relevant here...

I have been finding erratic & slow USB recognition/processing for a while with W10, after a lot of messing about it looks like it is related to w10 recent builds & USB drivers.  I have had things working perfectly, w10 update screws it, new drivers come out - fixes it; then w10 breaks it again....

Using different external hubs dramatically changes performance for me when connecting v 1.1 or v2.x to v3 ports.
v3 is supposed to be compatible with v2 but it hasn't been 100% for me this year, last year it was ok & everything was recognised correctly.
Sometimes now I need to daisy-chain devices with a hub to get recognition/performance.

We are not speaking here about USB sluggish performance. The thread was started about local SSD drive refresh issue.

Really? How about stating LOCAL SSD in the POST or TITLE THEN?  Hi-liting .iso doesn't tell anyone where the .iso is.

I can say I have 0 indexing speed problems with the multiple SSD & SSHD drives on this machine when using MC.

Support and Feedback / Re: Jump to Root
« on: March 12, 2018, 14:40:25 »
Thanks Mathias, I guessed it was probably Win10 & not MC.

I am the only user, my a/c is the passworded <name>/admin a/c.  I have not allowed any other guest etc a/c's.
Booting without password doesn't give me/anyone full access.
'Users' group has zero permissions.

So I have full permissions, but programs installed & run by me in this single environment might not....  ::) Not logical or helpful.

In the example of Handbrake & MC (both running in an admin environment but not admin mode) I can load a file using the 'open source' (browse) dialog, but not drag n drop.  Only possible when MC is in Admin mode.  ??? :o

I think M$ needs to streamline this muddled, contradictory & illogical behavior.  >:(
Full admin control is potentially dangerous but as sole user that should be my call.

Anyway I will keep poking about & see if there is some buried switch that I can use to improve this situation.

« on: March 11, 2018, 14:59:31 »
The 'back' movement process is behaving now, but I have discovered something about my context menu omissions.
In Win10 Pro x64 if MC is run as Admin a lot of context menu items (3rd party shell exts) disappear, when MC is not run with admin permission they appear as they do when I run win explorer.   ??? :-\

I am logged into Win as admin but Win10 still messes about with permissions so I generally need to run MC as admin.
Eg I cannot drag & drop a file into Handbrake from MC if not in Admin mode.
Any ideas how I can get these things to work at the same time Mathias? (ie all context menu items & full permissions for MC.)

Hi Mathias.
I was referring to 'back' mouse button & when double clicking on the <-... at the folder head.
But today it is magically working.  ::)  All last week it was jumping all the way up the tree.

I used ShellExView to inspect my context menu items.  It shows the ones I have issues with in red-hi-lites but not as disabled.  It will not enable them.   ???
Puzzling... :(

I was forced to update W10x64 to 1709 & since then I have had a couple of glitches in MC 7.7 b2404 -

  - the focus jumps to root of folder when 'back' is used
(ref:- http://forum.multicommander.com/forum/index.php/topic,1864.msg7164.html#msg7164);

  - missing icons for 3rd party progs on right click menu (they are present in Explorer).

Any ideas?

I expect this is something I have not noticed before, normally when I use MDV with the search dialog it hi-lites the search terms so I can step thru them.
Using a Regex is a bit different  :P

I just received some new mobo drivers from ASUS.
They seem to have resolved the USB issue.  I am having to go through the nvda drivers one by one to see if the latest builds still cause problems.
This may have saved you!  :) :P

Hmmmm   maybe it's the 'short ops' switch that's the reason...?
What defines short vs long?

You are right about the dialogs of course Mathias, I just had a lot of copy/move ops that made all these things occur in the same 5 minutes :D

I've been experimenting with nvda drivers & haven't yet found a 100% fix.
I still have usb device issues with the newest builds.
I have tried hooking VS to MC & tracking the crash - it doesn't seem to give much info.  Mostly the OS file version numbers are listed & nothing definite is revealed (like an exception or sth).
I used WinDBG on the mc.dmp & got only this -
Code: [Select]
Loading Dump File [...MultiCommander.DMP]
User Mini Dump File with Full Memory: Only application data is available

Is it worth uploading the <300mb?  What else is contained in the dmp?  (e.g. could the dmp compromise data on my machine if it was taken by a malicious user?)

This may be related to my earlier problem above.

MC 7.7 b2404 x64 win10

I noticed that if selecting multiple files & using this on a button -
MC.Explorer.Copy NODIALOG USEEXISTINGQUEUE
or
MC.Explorer.Move NODIALOG USEEXISTINGQUEUE
the dialog remains open at he end of the operation.

eg clicking the button after each selection to queue
c:\abc\abc.exe
c:\def\fgr.mkv
d:\sss\ades.cfg
leaves the dialog open at 100%

selection of a single file/folder - dialog will close but not every time

Also on the original topic - I wondered about a Rename ALL button on the new dialog where a (#) could be appended. (Maybe you are already on to that option?)

Support and Feedback / Nvidia driver causing MC lockup Win10
« on: January 24, 2018, 14:49:36 »
Taken me a while to figure this one out...  My clue was that NvFBCPlugin would hang any attempt to restart the pc!

I noticed that MC would :-
  • hang on startup flag if a USB device was connected at boot;
  • lockup if I connected a USB drive;
  • sometimes not see a drive even if it was visible/usable in Win Explorer.

MC usually cannot be terminated by TM or ProcExp once it has entered not responding state.  If MC thread is apparently terminated (no longer shown in TM list) GUI or start-up flag remains on-screen.
Attempting to restart the OS normally will hang the PC.
System needs to be fully powered-off to recover the OS.  Hitting Reset not enough even with USB devices unplugged & w10 fast boot disabled to recover a working OS.

NVDA 390.65-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql  seems to be the cause.  Clean install back to 388.71 so far resolves these issues.

Whilst this issue is probably HW specific, I think its worth sharing the info...

I am using MC x64 7.7 b2404 on Win10 x64 b170317-1834 on
Asus B350M-A
Ryzen 1800x
TEAMGROUP-UD4-3200

Mathias - would a MC.dmp made by TM help you?

It's mc x64 7.6 b2391
I wonder if this is where the issue lies -
Code: [Select]
MC.Explorer.Move NODIALOG USEEXISTINGQUEUEUser def buttons for pane to pane copy & move.

I will have to try <ctrl> + c/x/v on identical files later to verify that... ;)

Hi Mathias.
Decided to build a new rig - new mobo, cpu ram in new case with W10.
New SSD boot drive & I swapped the other storage HDs into this chassis
Clean OS install.
I'm not using the W10 app version of MC.
Using Comodo CIS again - that is almost the only thing it has in common.

Same result   :o ???

Sorry I forgot to put the MC version :(
MC 7.6 b2391 on W7 x64.

I have never seen anything like it before this build.  First time it appeared was a duplicate pdf.
All the transfers are internal & not encrypted or packed.  Also occurred with a .mkv.

It is on internal SATA copy & move ops between HDD, SSHD & SSD.
It occurs when a duplicate file is encountered - same name/size/timestamp.
I've seen it quite a few times now.
I always get 0 byte files from the 1600's - the heyday of computing!  :)

I am guessing that the unusual date & 0 byte filesize if overwrite/skip etc is req'd, is on your to do list.
I had a WTF moment when I saw that totally wrong file info appear during a copy op :D

I like the new dialog ;)

OK thanks Mathias. 8)

I can see that there would be a lot of variables to consider.  I guess a plug-in could give the most flexible approach & would reduce the number of core changes to MC...?

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Virtual folder?
« on: November 02, 2017, 11:58:19 »
I've been wondering about a way to visually compare multiple folders & contents.
My want is a virtual container/folder that allows me to delete entries in the source folders, without them being physically present in the same physical dir.
I want to virtually merge to show all folders/files so I can weed out the duplicates &/or older versions.
Windows virtual folders (search) is restricted to files AFAIK, so the search result compares only contents as a 'virtual folder'.
I tried MC search with wildcards etc but results weren't 100% as the search terms pre-define what I see & I could easily skip an entry if my search template wasn't perfect.

What can be done if:-
Multiple folders of similar name with contents of similar names + different timestamps/versions & duplicates in nested folders e.g.
Code: [Select]
<folder 1>
file1.abc
file2a.abc
file3.abc

\<folder 1.2>
file1.abc
file2a.abc
file3.abc

<folder 2>
file1c.abc
file2c.abc
file3a.abc

<folder 3>
file1b.abc
file2.abc
file3.abc

\<folder 3>
file1b.abc
file2.abc
file3.abc

I could just copy everything into a common folder, but that isn't fool-proof & uses up a lot of disk space.
I could make lists of dirs & then merge these to review contents - but time-consuming.

Can MC be made to do this?
Any ideas or tools that allow me to do this kind of thing?  I haven't found a Comparison prog that does exactly what I want, great for specific file changes but for a fuzzy review of 5+ dirs & sub-dirs, not so much.
