Support and Feedback / Saving column layout bug
« on: February 12, 2019, 13:17:55 »
Hi. First thank you for all your great work! MC is just amazing and I use it every day (humble thank donation sent yesterday)
I've been using MC for a long time and I think i had this problem before in the past too but i somehow got it liveable, yet now reinstalling on new pc i'm facing it hard again: i can't seem to save the column layout. All i want is that i have 2-3 columns with files (i'm not sure but years ago i might've even proposed this feature and it was implemented). I just can't seem to make MC remember my settings. I've tried everything I could think of:
a) right cllicking and unchecking ext, genrre, date, length fields. They dissapear, but i close and restart and they're back
b) customize columns and removing them from there, didn't work either
c) save a profile with them gone, i seemed to have partial success but only partial, I have created first the profile Void and then another one called iXaarii and they are indeed saved, which does help in restoring faster, but I still have to do it manually as the defaults seem to be lost on each closing and reopenning of MC.
d) Funnily enough one side did sort-of remember the settings so i can right click there and say "save current as default" which makes the right side also go to that state, but this sate too is imperfect and still has the EXT column when i'd like to have them without any columns at all
e) i've tried from customize settings everything i could think of, different settings, saving as new, making micro changes and then clicking update for each name & ext and then save changes... still lost on restart
f) then i noticed autoset for these paths so i tried with c:\ and with * and neither seemed to work.
g) I've tried configuration->Explorer panel settings - > autosize columns on and off as well as others there and no results

Attaching screenshots for what I mean. Would love to have these settings saved so i don't have to manually restore them on each restart of MC. Obviously i managed to get SOME progress by randomly repeating tens of times any and all of the above steps in all orders I could think of, but didn't manage to do it as I wanted, and I couldn't figure out what actually got it to save.

What I want in short is: for ALL paths, on all drives, set so as i can see 2-3 columns of files.

PS: could this be a bug somehow linked to quick paths which i use a lot? Settings even when i manage to have them changed/applied seem to reset for my most crucial folder: c:\wrk to which i'm constantly travelling to by pressing ctrl+3 via quickpath favorites (aaaamazing feature, btw). This can't be the whole of it as even without this I do lose the settings when I restart MC but I thought i should mention it in case it's part of the bug. (Named attachment screenshots with explanations)

Thank you for your patience and in advance for your help and of course again and again for all the work you put into MC all over the years and making it such a wonderful productivity tool! thank you!!!

Support and Feedback / Condensed view settings - confused
« on: November 12, 2012, 11:30:49 »
Okay, i'm finally caving in and asking: i just can't figure out how the display settings work in MC. I've tried and tried, spent many many minutes across many instalations in the last months, but I just can't figure it out and with every install I do eventually find a solution that sort-of works, but always only after a lot of frustration, so I have to ask! Basically all i want to do is see just the filename+extension, in multi column, and without any visual clutter like date/size and attrib. I seem to remember in some past times I got this solved by removing (via right click) columns... or no, i think that didn't work, and then I went into customize columns... but then there were always problems such as say only seeing "JP"out of a "JPG"extension or such things.

Also I always kept making changes and used them only to find out that after a restart I lost them. Or today for example I had somehow managed to make them and then found out that when creating a new tab suddenly they were all lost and then I had to recreate them... and now that I did recreate them I can't see the multi column view (which btw was such a FANTASTIC surprise)... so, I'm throwing in the towel: pleeeease, somebody tell me how to do this right once and for all :P I would very much appreciate your help. I've been struggling with this one a lot and didn't wanna ask if I could fix it myself, but I just can't seem to get to the bottom of it. I want that always and at all times to see only name.ext columns of files (eg. not just a long list as I'm seeing now... i know the feature is somewhere in there because if I manually drag a column width for a few seconds I can see multiple columns beautifully form... now if only there was a way to at some point just release the mouse and for it to stay that way, with that configured width... oh, how wonderful it would be!)

Thank you very much in advance for your help, and big thanks to the MC creators for providing us with such a great program!

PS: to clarify, where I'm currenntly stuck is I have managed to create a single column "name" which includes the extension, and I am in List mode, but I can't seem to be able to make multi columns stay longer than when I'm holding down the mouse dragging the bar at the top right of the file viewer, and as soon as I let go they go back to just one column

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Better Time Estimations
« on: November 06, 2012, 13:06:19 »
Just wanted to mention that it would be really great if the time estimations could be improved. They're bad enough in normal everyday use, leading to many a time of family waiting upset for me to get out as I only wait for a copy to finish and it lasts many minutes past the estimated time even after 50% progress, but now I'm actually doing a big hdd move and i've seen quite a couple of time seconds that last for many minutes. For example in the last 5 or more minutes my estimation just changed from "25seconds remaining" to "21 seconds remaining". If you could do something about this it would be really cool.

I'm guessing the problem might come from estimating just sizes, and maybe smaller file sizes mess up the estimation. Isn't there some way that could be compensated. Or even better (possibly simpler?) somehow to readjust the estimation of time based on the success of the previous estimation/how much time has passed by percentage of copy? I mean when a copy/move that was estimated as at a few seconds lasts more than 10 minutes for n files, maybe one could assume that also the next n files will take another 10 minutes?

Of course all of this I'm asking very humbly and thankfully. I and my wife are so very thankful for the great work you've put into MC and for giving it out for free. It has taken up a major part in our daily computer use. Thank you!

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Quick Search Exit
« on: August 01, 2012, 16:32:24 »
Hey! I haven't been around lately but that's not because of lack of interest, but exactly because MC has been working so very awesomely! Thank you so much for that! I do have one thing that has been bugging me for a couple of weeks that I wanted to ask you if it was possible to fix:
I use quick search all the time to jump to files, and that's just fantastic, thank you so much for adding that feature. My only problem is that I often search for something and then want to search for something else but the Esc key doesn't seem to cancel out the search mode. This can be quite annoying as the only way I have found out of it is a couple of enters. What happens is that the quick search finds something, but sometimes not what I wanted and then not even the arrow keys work any longer, and by hitting enter I am entering whatever folder happens to be selected, and then I have to reexit it to get back where I was.
Thank you so much for everything! You've really enriched our lives with your software. Thank you so much!

Support and Feedback / Stuck in update mode
« on: May 30, 2012, 20:38:05 »
hi. Is there something I could do to reset MC? Just moved to a new place, bad temporary internet through phone and it crashed during an update. Now whenever I want to start it I just get some error windows (attached). The only thing I can do is click okay. Is there any way to reset the process, either get back to the old version or even better restart the upgrade without it instantly crashing? If I download a new version what can I do so I don't lose my customized colors and bookmarks? Thank you!

Support and Feedback / Search listing/box in same Panel?
« on: April 27, 2012, 18:16:52 »
Is there any way I could make the search box/listing appear in the same panel as I'm currently in? For all operations the active panel is the one I'm working with, and that stays consistent, so over decades of working with dual panel navigators my brain has gotten used to having a purpose for the left panel and one for the right panel, and managing them separately and saving one for one purpose so to me it's very confusing each time I want to search for some files that suddenly I'm not only jumped from the right to the left one, but also suddenly some important data that i wanted to keep visible on the left panel is hidden from view under an new surprise tab. I find this quite annoying. Is there any way I could disable/control this? Thank you very much!

Support and Feedback / filecount with shift-PGDN select
« on: April 27, 2012, 18:12:56 »
The file count isn't updating when you shift select with page down. It works fine when you insert select files one by one, but if you're working with folders with hundreds of files that's a bit slow so it would be nice if the file count in the status bar would update when shift-PGDN selecting.
Thank you so very much for all your great work and frequent updates!
PS: is multi column listing by any chance on the horizon? :D

It would be nice to be able to hide it. I see no purpose to it in my daily use (all the options in there are in shortcuts or menus) and I would like to disable it. I thought this is what happened in today's update but I now realize that the drive toolbar turning off is something else (can't figure out what though).
It's a small thing, but it would earn some screen space, and 3x2 more files/folders visible on the screen could be nice.
Thank you!

Feature Requests and Suggestions / not opening all selected
« on: March 07, 2012, 10:20:08 »
I've been meaning to ask about this one for a while, but figured it can wait, but now I have a, I hope, more convincing example that will hopefully help me argue that it does not make intuitive sense or user friendliness that the enter key on a file opens not just the focused file but all the selected files:
I was emptying my photo camera and was sorting the images and in the process of moving and sorting I hit enter to check one of the new files. Little did I know this would open not just the image I wanted but hundreds more (I dread to think what would have happened had i been working not with images but videos or audio files). This happened like 20 minutes ago. It totally froze my (rather powerful) desktop but since I was afraid of losing some important data I figured I'd wait. Since then I ate, and am writing this on my laptop. I think I'll wait a while more hoping not to lose data, but in the end I might have to force reboot via hardware. Something milder than this has happened to me before. I admit it may be argued it's my fault, that I'm not yet used to persistent selections, but even without them I would like to humbly argue that it makes more sense to open only the current file on 'Enter', and that for those needing to individually open tens of instances of windows with different files there's always right clicking and 'Open all'.

With respect,

Feature Requests and Suggestions / replace all & auto rename all
« on: March 07, 2012, 09:48:29 »
Hi. Two productivity suggestions that I think would be very cool:
1) a quick shortcut to replace all files. Example: i just downsampled a lot of images and now I want to overwrite them. I do F6, Enter, and then I get the overwrite question. Would be great if every one of those buttons would have a little hotkey. For example I'd do "F6, Enter, (alt?)l" sequence very fast knowing that would quickly select replace-all. Since this is done often I think this would speed up the workflow in MC.
2) one button that I think is missing there is Auto-rename and Auto Rename All. In cases like this with tens of files in case you know they just all happened to have been numbered in a generic way like 1, 2, 3, 4, .... by the camera it would be nice to have the option to autorename them with one click. For example then if there are two 1 images the new one would become 1a or something like that

Oh, and that reminds me, maybe it's changed since then, but would also be nice to have an all as administrator in case it's needed. I haven't needed this recently so maybe the issue is gone but I remember a while ago I was deleting stuff from a mobile hdd and for every single file it would ask me if I want to do it as administrator and go into that authorization mode.

Thank you so very much! Hope I'm not annoying you with all these suggestions. Sure, it would be helpful to me, but also in the end it will help make MC into even better with small tweaks, so I hope you won't get upset at me.

Feature Requests and Suggestions / current file: marking and size
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:59:51 »
Hi. It seems to me that it's a bit hard sometimes to instantly realize the current file/where the current operation will act. Because of that I would suggest instead of a thin line that stands between two files some kind of background or file highlithing/bolding/... The line is quite thin, and it often takes a whole second to realize where it is and weather it refers to the previous or next file, sometimes I only notice it after moving it up and down.  Also about the current file I think always the current file should have some info displayed about it in the status bar. In particular I care about the file size and I think that is always relevant about the current file. Right now to find out the size of a file in a folder i have to navigate to it, select it, and then unselect it, and then do this  again for the next file and so on. Yes, I use MC in a sort of minimal mode with only file & extension columns to avoid visual clutter and since I only rarely need file sizes... but when needed I think this would be a fast and elegant way to show it. I see there would be plenty of space for this to be added to the status line by the usual (not so useful) 0 files and 0 folders selected text, even if both are kept, though possibly it would make sense to switch between these two modes: when you have nothing selected that line would show info about he current file, and when you had files selected it would switch back to what is showing now: the size and consistency of the selection.
Respectfully & thankfully,
Void lon iXaarii

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Left & Right arrows navigation
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:45:48 »
A few days ago I excitedly showed my discovery of MultiCommander to my programmer wife and tried to convinced her that we should do a full switch: she used it for a few features but said she can't live without the left-right keys and went back to our previous file manager. I'm telling this story as an illustration of what I felt too, so I would like to humbly and respectfully ask if it would be possible to have the left & right arrow keys behave like home & end. I think this behavior makes a lot fo sense: your hand is always on the up-down keys anyway and it's a waste to have the neighbouring left-right do nothing, and it makes a lot of sense to have them do the one thing that would take a lot of key strokes/pressing to do otherwise: navigated to the top and bottom of the list of files.

Thank you very much for all the great things you're doing and your patience and help with us!

Feature Requests and Suggestions / filtering + folders
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:40:36 »
One thing I found rather confusing and wanted to ask for a tweak on is the quick filter. It's a brilliant idea, but because of one little option I find it difficult and don't use it enough: let's say i have folders with many .jpg files. I want to filter *.jpg. The confusing thing is that if I go one level up to go into another folder of images I don't see the folders. I think the filder should be set so that folders can be set to be always visible. They are the containers in which we navigate in and thus making them disappear takes us out of context. Because of this I often use the search... but that's not so optimal so thought I'd mention this. I think maybe there could be a check box in the config near the filter to toggle the visibility of folders.

Feature Requests and Suggestions / midfilenamequick search
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:36:43 »
It would be awesome if there was an option to set the quicksearch to work inside filenames, not only with the first letters. So for example I would like to type "pho..." and be jumped to the folder "Interesting Photos". This is handy as sometimes in big folders with many files I quickly remember for example in a book list the author name, instead of the book name and I'd like to be on the file even if the author comes after the book name. Thank you so very much!

PS: the new beta is brilliant and already has shockingly many new features and fixes! Awesoooooooomee!!!

Feature Requests and Suggestions / hot paths drag&drop sorting
« on: February 24, 2012, 16:52:13 »
Would be cool if that list of hot paths that drops on right clicking the current path had it's individual lines movable with the mouse. So for example now I've realized that I've got ctrl+1 occupied with something not quite as important as a new folder I want to add, and if that were possible I could just opene the list, move the current path to the desired position and then add there another one.

Support and Feedback / selected file size units
« on: February 24, 2012, 10:02:59 »
I've found where to change the free space and the file size to Gb & Mb, but I can't find a place to change the unit of measure for when i select say 10 files in a row. For me it's K. Thank you! (for everything, and your patience and help with a noob)

Support and Feedback / address-standard-drives... section
« on: February 24, 2012, 09:58:07 »
Is there a way to make the top section disappear? It seems redundant to me and just taking up screen space. The drives are already shown in each panel, the address also. It looks like it can be dragged off with a mouse, but to me it isn't reacting that way.  (v.2.0.0)

Support and Feedback / 7-zip compression level
« on: February 24, 2012, 09:50:49 »
First of all thank you so very much for including 7-zip packing. It's kickassawesomeeeeeeeee!!! In TC I had tried to set it up with plugins but it lacked a progress bar which for longer compressions made it totally unusable as it felt like the computer froze up. So, thank you sooooooooo very much! One question though: what compression level is it set on? Can it be changed? It seemed to me like it's at least normal, if not maximum, in which case it's great for me, but was wondering if I missed it somewhere. Thank you!

Support and Feedback / selection reset on folder change?
« on: February 24, 2012, 09:46:00 »
At first I found it very confusing that files would remain selected when I get out of a folder and come back, then I thought it might be a cool feature once I get used to it, but I'm now afraid the risk is too high of deleting files I once selected earlier leading to compulsive Ctrl-D pressing. Is there a place where I can set this to default? Thank you!

Support and Feedback / closing unpacking progress window
« on: February 24, 2012, 09:40:42 »
Sorry if it's there but I just can't find it: is there a way to set the progress window to close automatically after unpacking a set of files instead of having to then manually click close?

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Quick favorite folders
« on: February 23, 2012, 18:31:25 »
If there is one feature I find MC is still missing and which is stopping me from abandoning TC completely for that long awaited switch it would be this one: it is a huuuuge productivity booster. Basically what I'm doing thousands of times per day is Ctrl+D to open a quick floating menu and then typing one or two letters to select from that list one of my favorite folders. This speeds up HDD navigation 5x at least for me, since most of the time I'm doing operations to and from a certain small set of favorite folders, or nexus points. Please pleeeeeeeeeeeease pleeeease implement this feature! This would be IMHO the biggest thing that could be added to the awesomeness that is already MC. Thank you so very much in advance! (is there any way to subscribe for when this feature might be implemented to get an instant notification that I may upgrade, even if it's a super beta?)

As a quick example I would do
Shortcut, D - I'm transported to my downloads folder
Shortcut, T - i'm transported to my temporary folder
Shortcut, W - I happily teleport to my work related files folder
and so on. Hugely hugely practical and fast.

As for how the naming is done that's also ingenious as the name of the destination folder doesn't even have to start with that letter, so for example a folder named E&xample would have as it's key X, not E.

Thank you so very much in advance! I so want to make MC my new center of command for me, my wife and all the friends I'm recommending a sped up workflow to :D

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Multiple columns
« on: February 23, 2012, 18:27:23 »
Hi. Since this is my first post I would like to also say a huuuuge thank you to the developers. This program is the answer to my prayers for many years. Thank you so much for making such a great too free for us productivity oriented people! THANK YOU!

So, what I wanted to ask for is the ability to have multiple columns of files (I found 3 is best for me). There seems to be some issue with MC remembering unchecked properties (i usually just need the file & extensions columns), but I was able to fix that with a customized column set, but I have found no way to make 3 columns of filenames in one tab. If I'm missing it and it can be tuned to do that I apologize for not noticing (how!?!? :D )
