Support and Feedback / Update to v2.7.2
« on: December 22, 2012, 04:26:22 »
I had MC v2.7.1 Portable. Recently when i started MC, I found alert on MC screen that a newer version is available and I could upgrade to this by clicking. I clicked MC to be upgraded.
After that my MC is giving many sorts of troubles when I use it on different computers. The most common error I receive is this repeated reminder to update to newer version.
I did a bit of homework on this and found that after updating, my Documents and Settings folder had a directory named Multi Commander, which did not appear previously. I have no clue how did this directory suddenly appear because it was never created before.
I have strong feeling that while updating from v2.7.1 to v2.7.2 they installed regular version instead of Portable.
Therefore, I uninstalled MC totally and manually downloaded MC Portable v2.7.2 and reinstalled it.
It works perfect now but I have lost hundreds of my personal tweaks on MC.
Sir, if this is a flaw or mistake in updating, please take care in future to upgrade regular MC to regular and Portable to Portable. If it is other that flaw, perhaps you can explain on this problem so that I can take precautions in future, when upgrading.
Thank you

Support and Feedback / Re: Copying from Iso file
« on: October 31, 2012, 04:56:23 »
Thanks.

Yes, MC is designed from the beginning too NOT lock the main UI and in most situation it works. This is somethings that must be designed from the beginning because it can be very hard to change that later on without major rewrites.

Also, If you start a new copy operation while you already have one running, you can choice to add it to the queue of the already running copy operation or start a new. Because if you start multiple copy operation that work against the same hard drive the performance can really suffer (unless you have SSD drives )
Mathias Sir,
You amaze me everyday for what you explained is another mile forward, as far as the strength if MC is.  Having queue is wonderful option for users like me who handle very large files.
Icing on cake is this wonderful forum, which makes MC in what MC is today, persons like me can learn more and more of this truly strong MC. Here your pinpointed help in simple explanations, creating matching wavelength with users like me have no knowledge of technical aspects, is a blessing.
Sir, as an user I have some suggestions to make which I wish to, only because I love MC and have no intent to question your ability, or the design. Perhaps my suggestions are not applicable to all users but I wish to put them over and let you decide what is right to include what not.
Getting OK from you I shall post them.
Best of luck Sir.

Support and Feedback / Copying from Iso file
« on: October 30, 2012, 15:12:40 »
Sir, I have almost all paid File Managers. I only work on Commanders never on 'My Computer'.

There is a feature only in Multi Commander which is not in any other. I came across it only today.

I was copying (extracting) a file sized 7 Gb from an Iso file. While files was extracted I found two task bar MC icons, one for 'Multi Commander' another for 'Copy'. It took about 15 minutes on this operation. Being curious why two icons were showing, I started navigating in main window, and IT WORKED. I could change drive, change directory while copy continued. I did not have to wait for 15 minutes for Copy operation to finish.

On top of all, that 'Copy' window is so descriptive like showing bytes, time and many other, while copying.

This feature was available in 90's in Gyula's Navigator. Now on all File managers, main window stays locked until Copy is completed.. I have been suggesting them to fix this but I think they have no clue how to do this.

This was a pleasant surprise.

This is why I say Multi Commander is miles ahead of others.

Sir, please add this into your opening HELP dialogue. I am sure many who work with large files, would  love this feature.

And if your GoFlex is listed in the tray as removable then it should be able to disconnect it from MC.
Mathias Sir,
Wile this drive stays connected an icon on task bar is displayed with option to "Safely Remove Hardware". I always click on this icon before I intend to disconnect my G: Freeagent GoFlex Drive.
After I remove drive that Icon disappears.
Best of Luck Sir.

Yes Jungle Sir,
I did It.
It looks great to have six tabs open when I open MC, which I would never get. Previously I had to always manually change to each one, which took enormous time Sir.
Thank you Jungle Sir.

I have Freeagent GoFlex Drive set is my G: drive. This is 1tb portable storage drive. There is an icon which I think is supposed to connect/disconnect such drives. However this icon is not active but my G: drive is displayed in drive bottons. Therefore I can not click on it to disconnect G: drive.

How is it connected to the computer USB ? ESATA ? Network ? Is it Removable in the list of removable devices in Windows, when you press the tray icon windows has for removable devices ?

Sir, this is connected to computer by USB port. When it stays connected MC as well My Computer shows it on button bar as G, when not MC only displays drives C: D: E: (F:\ being portable CD drive). Enclosing Screenshots.
This is not big issue but I would want it to work if MC has such option Sir.
I once again wish to praise this wonderful work, which is wonderfulx5 because of persons like you Jungle ans Mathias Sir.

You may create autostart file and pass it as command line parameter.

Sir,

I went to command line parameter site and followed instructions. I created Startup.Ini (File Enclosed).
I then edited MC desktop Icon with following :

"C:\Portable Applications\Multi Commander\MultiCommander.exe" -F="C:\Portable Applications\Multi Commander\Startup.Ini"

I am enclosing bmp file of MC when I opened from desktop.

There is some mistake somewhere but I can not locate.

Please help.

Support and Feedback / Tabs on Panels

I am using double paned file managers from the old Norton Commander for Dos, before Windows Software was born.
I have never used Windows 'My Computer'.
I updated myself to newer file managers as and when they came out.
I have almost all file managers available and many of them are paid file managers.
In this long span of use I have never come across any file manager which offered Tabs on panels, which I discovered in MC 2.7.2.
I have no clue how many more options I am going to discover in MC which are very useful to common user like me.
Sir,
I need help on the following:
1. I have Tabs in left panel, a. D:\abcd 2. E:efcg. on my right panel I have a. E:\hiij, E:\klmn, E:\opqr. I wish to set this as my start option. In other words I want these to open when I start MC.
3. When cursor stays on a file, it changes by displaying line with an underline (without changing color). If possible, I would like to change color of whole line to indicate that cursor is there.
4. In backup/restore option only two files from Config get backed up and none from SessionsCOnfig, which I see are changed. I have no clue if other files are needed in case of a reinstall, using all current options.

Best of luck Sir.

Support and Feedback / Best File Manager
« on: October 24, 2012, 13:03:38 »
MC is best File Manager available.
Even when available free, MC is miles ahead of other paid File Managers.
MC has limitless options to work with.
MC 2.7.2 is much stronger also better organized than 2.7.1.
Mathias (Author) is truly expert and very helpful in understanding and suggesting solutions.
Jungle is no less expert.
Due to different levels of user knowledge, it is no joke to read, understand, pinpoint then suggest solutions.
Most of all, this forum is strength of MC, instant help is available 24x7.
Best is the start up Hints, which amplifies so many commands, which average users like me would never find.
I am using MC 2.7.2 for two months and I learn one new option everyday.
Best of Luck.

"How did you upgrade ? Built in process or download and replaced everything.
The build in process should do not overwrite you settings files.

Are you running Normal or Portable version ? (They store settings in a different way )

If you type ":goconfig" in the command line field you will be takes to the location where the settings files are stored, Is it this files you should backup/restore.
"
1. I upgraded by built in process.
2. I never touched anything in system files for I do not know anything.
3. I am running portable version.

Support and Feedback / suggest customization files

Your Topic "What do YOU want to see in the next major version" does not contain "REPLY" button.

But anyway I would suggest that the customization files need to be simplified. If possible they sould be merged into one file.

Mathias Sir,
First of all let me share what I think of this Multi Commander and you. It is more my pleasure to have found this software. It is more my delight to have found you Sir as 24x7 helper to me for learning and customizing this wonderful Commander.
My question]  7. How to disable splash screen at start up was more intended towards learning if there was any option for this than to insult you or undermine the software Sir. Your answer to mine  7 - Not possible. why, what problem does it give looks like you got offended by my question Sir. I have been so much impressed by Multi Commander that I am very keen to learn its tons of options so that I am able to localize options for my personal needs. Some other softwares offer to disable splash screens and this is why I asked this Sir. I offer my unconditional apologies to have hurt your feelings, without such intentions.
I must say I have tweaked all as you described successfully.
One more. I have a backup of Xml files into Zip file. If in future if there are any later updated versions and I instal them over my present version, do I need to over write Xml files to retain my customized settings in earlier version Sir.
Thank you Sir.

3. How to add/remove buttons in File Commands Tool Bar.

5. Selected file has just an underline below it. How to change it to full row color change for selected file.
6. Is there any file for quick Reference with short explanations to all default Hot key options.

Support and Feedback / Re: Customisation
« on: May 14, 2012, 23:28:39 »
Mathias Sir,
I did as you suggested and it works.
I am dual pane commander user since Dos days when they had Norton Commander. Presently I have 3-4 paid and 1-2 Free Commanders. Therefore, as the end user I can give some final user comments better than software engineers Sir.
I have a few comments on Multi Commander. Multi commander is generation different than all others. It has very strong features, no nonsense stuff. Its basic design concept approach is wonderfully logical. Tons of localization and customization options make it look amazing. To quote  a few out of hundreds, I do not think any other Commander has options and tweaks on colors or choice of font and size.
Over and above this, this forum is icing on cake, with people like you who take care of below average users like me so beautifully. Sometimes ignorant of computer logic people like me ask crazy questions but the patience you display is commendable Sir.
I shall bother you from time to time for customization or localization issues Sir.
Best of luck.

Mathias Sir,
Many of my files are big (i.e over 500mb or even over 1gb).
I prefer to see bytes in "Size" column display.
Big file sizes show truncated.
Perhaps is need to increase width of "Size" field by 1 or 2 spaces.
Please help Sir.
Thanks in advance.

Mathias Sir,
I am very sorry to bother you so many times on same topic Sir. My ignorance is the reason therefore please forgive me Sir.

I went to : Menu > Configuration > Explorer Panel Settings > Layout (Tab)
Scrolled down to Date / Time format /Use custom date and time format

The I successfully edited both date and time formats, but even after I clicked on 'Apply' then 'Save", nothing happened. Settings did not change Sir.

« on: May 11, 2012, 15:31:19 »
By default it is using the date and time format defined in Windows. But you can override that in
Menu > Configuration > Explorer Panel Settings > Layout (Tab)
Scroll down to Date / Time format
There you can check "Use custom date and time format" and then change the format there below.

Sir, I went to Use Custom date and time format option. It showed checked and has only two sub-options. yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm which are fixed. There is no option to add or replace or delete them. Tell me how do I change to d/M/yy H:mm.

When you makes change in keyboard customization the configuration file : CustomKeymappings.xml  is created/change.
Look in your configuration folder if that file exists. and if it is changes when you do a change.
To find the config folder goto
Menu > Help > Goto > Config Folder

Yes Sir, CustomKeymappings.xml changed and it works.

Also edit desktop shortcut for MultiCommander.exe works fine Sir.
