Support and Feedback / Re: Ultra slow file copy
« on: August 31, 2012, 11:54:29 »
Exact what is best for you is hard to tell without the hardware and test. I only had real issue with USB Memory strick. never drives.
But since Normal work and Power does not.. enable all cache for power (or that ever profile it autoselects )

or set the same settings that you have under normal for the profile that is autoselected that drive.
A Normal Profile with the same settings as Power Profile will make the Power Profile act the the Normal profile

Strange their should not be any problem upgrading. Only the default settings files are overwritten when upgrading but not if you are running in portable mode.

Verify if it really runs in portable mode. check the about box.  under  Menu > Help > About

In the Information box, does it says "Running in portable mode : Yes"

If it does then the settings that are loaded are the one stored in the config/ in the folder that MultiCommander.exe is started from. Then copy the backup files here.

If is says "No" then the config file under "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\MultiCommander\Config\" ( type ":goconfig" to go there ) is loaded.

If the backup settings file are configured for portable mode then you will have "<config global="1"> in the beginning of MultiCommander.xml
then even if it says "No" in the about box you can copy the backup file over to the config/ folder where MultiCommander.exe is, and then when you start it should say "Yes"

Support and Feedback / Re: Slow mouse response
« on: August 31, 2012, 11:35:56 »
(I spitted the post into a new topic)

Rename is a bit weird in the mouse configuration. It does not fully work perfect when it is moving around among the buttons. It depends a bit on what action is on other buttons.

rename works best in "click and wait"
And in 'Click and wait' it will enter rename mode for an item after 0.5s. But only if then item was already selected and the mouse did not moved away from the file during that time.

Support and Feedback / Re: Ultra slow file copy

Copying is not so easy if you want maximum speed, Because different copy scenarios require different settings if you want maximum speed. unfortunately some hardware does not like it. And sometimes it is a problem to identify different hardware from each other. like USB attach harddrive and USB Attach memory sticks sometimes would need different settings to maximize the speed but the program sees them as the same type of device.

Windows Explorer does not use aggressive tricks to maximize speed and it can also find out if hardware support of the option or not. while 3de party developers can not. (Windows 8 will use even more different strategy to maximize the speed )

For example if source and target is one two different physical drives, you want to be be able to read / write at the same time. you do not was drive 1 to read some data then wait until drive 2 has written it, when drive 2 has written some data you want the data from drive 1 to already be read and ready to be written. However if you copy to/from the same physical drive you do not want this  (with the exception of SSD drives )

Normally when you copy a large amount of data you want to bypass the filesystem caches because letting the OS cache data is just taking to much extra time and if the data you are copying are more then the OS ever would be able to keep in cache it is spending time putting data in/out of caches for no good reason. and if OS write cache is used when copying large files you will get a freeze in the copy progress when it needs to flushes the cache and this is also annoying, problem is that some hardware. mostly older USB ram sticks, but also other hardware. does not like that and performance will suffer since the OS is handling the problem.

refresh a locked tab will open a new none-locked tab.
Im not able to make this happen. How do you refresh ?

refesh a none-locked tab only REFRESH the current tab.
Yes that is correct. unless both sides show the same path.

and also happend when refresh on c:\ tab(unlock on right panel ,and lock or unlock on left panel) and regain focus to mc(that is ,switch to other apps and switch back).
and ,if refresh too many times(most more than 3),MC crashes.
this bug occurs on version v2.7(build 1171) 64 bit version.
Im not able to repoduce this. Maybe you can provide some more info or step by step on how to make it happen?

3731
How did you upgrade ? Built in process or download and replaced everything.
The build in process should do not overwrite you settings files.

Are you running Normal or Portable version ? (They store settings in a different way )

If you type ":goconfig" in the command line field you will be takes to the location where the settings files are stored, Is it this files you should backup/restore.

Only 8 color profiles are supported.. But the entire color override system will be reworked so changes for this are coming.

Feature Requests and Suggestions / Re: Eject portable device
« on: August 30, 2012, 09:48:26 »
I know.. problem it that it does not always that happens,  only in some situations and not every time.  (might also be OS related, or some other condition that also affect it )
I had not had the time to figure out the exact situation where it happens.. But I got it on my todo list to fix.

You can do that with Multi-Script

Code: [Select]
@var $path = GetSourcePath();
$path = $path ^ GetClipboardText();

// Just to make sure we get a \ at the end
$path = $path ^ "";

MC.Explorer.Goto PATH="{$path}";

3736
Yes PgUp/PgDn are the same in Details,List and Thumb. But it is not possible to connect left/right to that action. But as I said before it might be possible to add so it can be done via script.

3737
3. Was not able to do so. Tried to turn off Drive drop down and turn on drive buttons, but buttons still on the separate panel. You can see what I would like to have on the attached screenshot.
In the layout tab in Exploer Panel Settings you can enable/disable all of the GUI components you mentions.

3738
Can Left/Right buttons in "Details" view act as PgUp/PgDn (like they work in "List" view)?
Like in List View ? PageUp/PageDown is the same in all modes. It moves the focus one page in length.

Configuring them are not possible at this time and not sure if it can be change. But might be possible to add so it can be scripted and then connect hotkeys to that script.

Hi, thanks for the nice app.

I have several quaestions/suggestions.
1. Is it possible to render controls (tabs, file filst) in "flat" style?
2. Is it possible to show <DIR> tag in the "Extension" field (instead of the "Size" filed)?
3. It is possible to enable drive buttons in each panel on a separate toolbar. Is it possible to show it instead of device dropdown list?
4. Is it possible to setup a backgroud color for the focus indicator?

1. Not possible and Do not think it will be added at this time.
2. Not possible right now. not sure if it will be added. maybe
3. You configure that in the Layout tab in the 'Explorer Panel Settings'  (Menu > Configuration > Explorer panel Settings )
4. You can configure all the colors for the Explorer Panel in the settings, In the settings their is a Colors tab where you configure that.

Tips and Tricks / Re: Correct Folder date
« on: August 25, 2012, 21:12:12 »
The idea to repair this NTFS "feature" to update a folder modification time every time when changes the folder content is fine itself. However it seems, that the latest file modification date does not always suit as the folder time.
I use this tool a lot and I have never had it fail on me. But if you can reproduce a case for me I'm happy to look at it.

Would not you consider alternate approach: let Multi Commander keeps the original date of the folder when it adds, deletes on renames a file or subfolder in this folder. Technically it should mean, that before starting any file operation in a folder, Multi Commander records for itself somewhere the current value of the "modified" attribute and when the operation is finished MC should restore this original value.
I think the default behavior of how NTFS is updating the modified time is good. The default behavior should be so that you can track changes to folders, It is only in some situations that you do not want that. And it is in those situations this tool will fix the time stamps for you.

It requires Windows XP SP3 as a minimum.. For the next version this will be change so that XP SP2 works again.

Okey. Well it is as I sad before.
Quote
That can not be controlled. It is so because the last created tab gets the focus..

So after MC start just press the "tab" key and the focus is changed to the other side. :)

Tips and Tricks / Change path, Keep subpath
« on: August 25, 2012, 15:41:09 »
There is a special trick with the path field that will allow you to change path but also allow you to keep the subpath.

This is something that are mostly useful for developers that work with multiple version and branches.
That has many folders structures that are the same.

For example.
You have several feature branches for the same application that you are working on in your developer folder

for example
  D:\Dev\MyApp\Branch_FeatureA
  D:\Dev\MyApp\Branch_FeatureB
  D:\Dev\MyApp\Branch_FeatureC

You are currently located in D:\Dev\MyApp\Branch_FeatureA\ComponentA\Source\ClassA\

And you want to change to the same location but under Branch_FeatureC.
(With other word you want to go to D:\Dev\MyApp\Branch_FeatureC\ComponentA\Source\ClassA\ )

To do that you can edit the path field and manually change Branch_FeatureA to Branch_FeatureC or you can move up the folder structure until you come to the MyApp folder Down the Branch_FeatureC folder until you reaches ComponentA\Source\ClassA\

This is not very optimal.  And there is an even faster way to to this.

If you right click on a parent location in the path field you will get a list of the folders in that location allowing you to fast go to a folder under a parent folder.

So if you right click on "MyApp" part in the "D:\Dev\MyApp\Branch_FeatureA\ComponentA\Source\ClassA" path in the path field, You will get a list showing Branch_FeatureA,Branch_FeatureB and Branch_FeatureC Then when you select Branch_FeatureC It will take you to that folder.

Now the special trick. If you hold Shift+CTRL when you right click on the "MyApp" part in the path field. It will try to keep the same subpath when it change the path. So when you then select "Branch_FeatureC" from the list,
it will take you directly to "D:\Dev\MyApp\Branch_FeatureC\ComponentA\Source\ClassA\", Keeping the same subpath as you currently are in.

If the subpath does not exists under the new path, it will take you in as far as it can.

Eh the bar , up /down ?
You mean that the left panel is in focus when you start ?

That can not be controlled. It is so because the last created tab gets the focus..

Multi-Tags can be used in Bat/External and Custom Commands and since you are calling an external bat your choice should be external.

So for example

Create a User Command of type : External
Code: [Select]
"D:\test.bat" ${sourcepath} ${targetpath}
