Very good explanation.  Thanks.  I guess I'll just use a slightly smaller font on my laptop.

Dual-pane startup is fine on my desktop system (large screen) but it would be nice to have a single pane startup option for laptops (smaller screens.)

Maybe there's a way to do this with 3.5.1 but so far I haven't found it.
