Thank you very much!  Placing "double quotes" around the command worked perfectly. Here is the button editor command I use to create a custom folder name using format YYYY-MM-DD  HH-MM-SS
MC.Explorer.Makedir FOLDERNAME=":[d] [t]"

I copied the template format into the command and surrounded it with double quotes.  Pics attached for others reading how to accomplish this.

Well it will give you a challenge this summer.  Go for it while you are at the beach!  :)

Thank you. I am using this command in the button editor to make the directory folder and it works.
MC.Explorer.Makedir FOLDERNAME=:[d][t]

But now I want a space in between the [d] and [t].  I tried this:
MC.Explorer.Makedir FOLDERNAME=:[d] [t]

MC cannot interpret this space and truncates the [t] if there is a space in between them. It only creates the YYY-MM-DD as the folder name. Is there a way to create a folder with a space in between YYYY-MM-DD and HH-MM-SS ?

Multicommander support forum uses old version SMF 2.0.19 and there are bugs in the editor. The latest release of Simple Machines Forum 2.1.7

I would like to suggest updating to the latest SMF version because as I have mentioned before, there are display issues when using the WYSIWYG HTML editor. You commented on this yourself last month in this thread: https://forum.multicommander.com/forum/index.php/topic,5189.0.html

Specifically, when I compose a post and create numbered lists or bulleted lists, the font is changed to a tiny size which is unreadable. I thought it was my browser at first, but this seems to be a known SMF bug. Upgrading to SMF 2.1.7 should fix this bug, and offer other improvements, described here:
https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=593921.0

Here are backup and upgrade instructions from the online manual:
https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading

There are also more themes available which look prettier. It's free so there is no cost.
Thank you for all that you do. MC is the best!

Only the button on the button panel FAILS.  The F7 key, the Create Folder icon on the toolbar, and "Menu > Tools Create Folder" work successfully. I am on beta 16.0 build 3181 64-bit Windows desktop edition.

While we are on this topic...
Is it possible to customize the create folder icon on the button panel to create a new folder using this format: YYYY-MM-DD HH-MM-SS. I want to combine the [d] and [t] variables in one step. Can this be done? The parameters I am using only create the date. I want to combine multiple variables, ie: date and time together.

6
STEP #10:
Press F7 to create a new folder on my local C: drive under my DOWNLOADS folder.  Nothing happens. No prompt. No dialog pops up. Nothing.

In the stable release, you can press F7 (MakeDir) get this dialog (see attachment).  For example, after I press F7 then I can type in ZZZ and click OK and a new folder called ZZZ is created.  In the beta, I am not prompted for anything. I did a clean install, too. How/where do I access the log?

Not sure what you're talking about dots. Sometimes after I preview/post here, the forum editor scrambles the content. I had to edit and remove the formatting then reapply the numbered list format.

I'm using Windows 11 Professional 64 bit.Windows Security thinks MC beta contains a virus. I'm sure it's a false alarm, but it was complaining about an unsigned DLL or some nonsense.

To suppress these alerts about MC, I had to adjust the Windows Virus & threat protection settings as follows:
  • Add File exclusion:
    C:\Program Files\MultiCommander (x64)\Extensions\MFTools\MFTools.dll
  • Add Folder exclusion:
    C:\Program Files\MultiCommander (x64)

Just wanted you to be aware of this.

8

Steps to reproduce the problem:

  • Backup your configuration!
  • Completely uninstall MC 64 bit, removing all settings (check all boxes when prompted.)
  • Download and install MultiCommander_x64_(15.8.0.3135).exe
  • Choose "Windows Explorer compatibility Look n Feel"
  • Exit MC
  • Restore your backup config
  • Exit MC
  • Launch MC
  • IMPORTANT: DO NOT UPDATE TO THE BETA WHEN PROMPTED!  choose "ASK LATER" for test purposes.
  • Create a Folder (F7). It works perfectly. The "New Folder" is created.
  • Exit MC
  • Launch MC again and this time, proceed to update to the beta
  • Create a folder (F7) fails. Nothing happens after updating to the beta version
so until this is repaired,  I am staying on the release channel. I had to go to Configuration -> Core settings and disable:
[ ] check for and download an update of a Beta version if available

Otherwise I'd have to remember to keep choosing "Ask Later" when prompted to update to the beta which would re-introduce the bug again. It's too easy for me to accidentally click the update and reintroduce the bug so that's why I'm staying on the release channel until I hear back from you

Kind regards
AB

Thanks Mathias, works perfectly now.  Interestingly enough, I searched my C: drive and found about 2 dozen copies of WebView2Loader.dll with various dates/sizes scattered in other Windows apps folders all over the place. Gotta love DLL hell! I thought we were over that, Microsoft! LOL  :D

Thank you that was very helpful. However, I chose to use the FILE options/parameter to perform a full, complete backup including FTP sides and MultiRename profiles. Here's the command I use:

Code: [Select]
MC.BackupConfig FILE="C:\Users\jmarr\OneDrive\SOFTWARE\Disk Tools\MultiCommander Portable\@Backups\MC_ConfigBackup.zip" MC.BackupConfig

The FILE parameter created 2 additional folders in the zip output that are excluded when using the ONLY_CONFIG parameter. The additional folders inside the backup zip (USERDATA) now include:
  • FS-FTP (FTPsites.xml)
  • Multi Rename (MultiRename profiles and UNDO data)
So, if you want a full backup, the FILE parameter is preferred over the ONLY_CONFIG parameter. It all depends on your use case. Backup scripting options are documented here under the "Advanced Backup and Restore Techniques" section: https://multicommander.com/Docs/backup_restore_config

I also created a custom Utility menu and placed the custom backup command there because I prefer a GUI reminder. MC is nice that it offers total customization! This has been a learning experience. I will have to read the documentation for more scripting ideas. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I hope this helps someone else, too!

Any update on this suggestion? It would be nice if MC remembered the last used backup folder.
Thank you

ShellMenuView by NirSoft is a small freeware utility that displays the list of static menu items that appear in the context menu when you right-click a file/folder on Windows Explorer, and allows you to easily disable unwanted menu items.

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shell_menu_view.html

You can disable some of the windows "junk" using this tool and streamline your context menu.

Today I updated to Multi Commander (x64) v 16.0 (build 3166).  Build date May 29 2026.
Problem: The View File menu (and F1 key) is no longer working for txt, csv files. When I select a txt file and choose View File, nothing happens. However it does work correctly for PNG files. I have not testing other file formats.  Any suggestions please? Thank you

oh my bad. I did not see that. How embarassing  :-[
 Thanks!!!

Please add a link to the MC change log under the HELP > ABOUT screen or as a separate menu item under the HELP menu:

I previously suggested this functionality on 2015-08-31 and 2025-05-07.
Thanks for your consideration. Longtime user and MC supporter

I'd like MC to remember, save and populate the backup directory/folder. It is too many steps to set the folder each time I want to create a new backup. I don't like that it starts with a blank box.

Thank you

I am confirming this issue has been fixed with today's update to MC x64 15.5 (build 3094) BETA.
Issue closed.

Yes, OneDrive is completely synced to local drive (see attachment #1 from File Manager:
C:\Users\jmarr\OneDrive\SOFTWARE\Communications\AnyDesk - Remote desktop

Can you please help me debug this issue? I don't understand what is causing this because File Manager renders the files and icons correctly. All help greatly appreciated!!

In attachment #1, File Manager shows the EXE icon correctly. However, MC shows the EXE as a blank white icon.

I've customized the MC column layout details to include "OneDrive Cloud Status" attribute (to help debug the issue, see attachment #2). Notice the #Items column (which is the OneDrive Cloud Status attribute, now says (3) Pending?).  Curious why the column header doesn't say "Status" but says "# Items" instead. Weird

MC is still showing a blank white icon for EXE filetypes. This is happening in other folders containing EXE files, not just this folder.

I uninstalled and re-installed MC. I also uninstalled and re-installed OneDrive and restarted my Windows 11 Pro laptop. No effect. MC is still showing EXE icons as blank white images (AnyDesk v9.5.1.exe)

Please help me. Thank you

Icons for EXE files are not rendered properly on Microsoft OneDrive.  They appear as all white icons. Other filetype icons display correctly, just not EXE files.   See screenshot

Longtime user and contributor to MC. I previously suggested this functionality on 2015-08-31.

I'd like to suggest adding a link to the change log be placed in either the HELP > ABOUT screen or as a separate menu item under the HELP menu:

Thanks for your consideration

Thanks for the quick reply. The Menu > Tools > Calculate folder size command returns 0 bytes.  Same if I click the KB icon in the toolbar

Upon further experimentation, I have observed the folder sizes are NOT calculated for any locally stored folders on Microsoft OneDrive and BoxDrive on my C: drive.

Other cloud folders like DropBox and GoogleDrive folders calculate the file sizes perfectly.  But OneDrive and BoxDrive will not calc the sizes and always return 0 bytes after I recalculate the folder sizes. I recently installed OneDrive on my new laptop and noticed it. This issue has never happened before. It's very strange indeed!

I don't understand what's different about the OneDrive and  BoxDrive folder permissions.  I checked and have full control on the security tab of the folder properties dialog.  I'm also running under my Windows 11 64-bit administrator account.

Any thoughts or suggestions to try next?  It's driving me crazy!  Thanks in advance

Hi Mathias

I don't see a problem for you as author adding the information to Wikipedia.  Consider that you (the developer) would be the only one to possess the technical details in the first place. You worked long and hard on MC, why not promote it and attract more users seeking the best file manager out there?

If you like, I am willing to edit the Wikipedia on your behalf, but I need your help to gather the MC technical information for the Wikipedia knowledge article. I think this would be great info to provide others looking to discover the awesome power and utility of MultiCommander!

I've created an Excel spreadsheet containing technical details (as much as I could gather) for you to review for accuracy.  See attached zip file. There are 8 tabs, one for each Wikipedia section in the article. I've collected everything in one place to make it easier for you to review and edit.

I know you're busy, but if/when you have the time, kindly please review/edit the Excel workbook and email me privately and I am more than willing to post MultiCommander information on Wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_managers

Cheers and thank you!  I eagerly await your response.

ps sorry for the many edits but I lost my original post while editing in this forum, so I have consolidated my replies to reduce noise.

Calculate Folder Size is broken.  The size of folders is not refreshed. When I click on the KB toolbar icon (or press Shift+Alt+Return), the DIR size shows 0 bytes.  See before and after images below.

Note: The "Always rescan folders" setting under Explorer panel settings has no effect.  I used to keep this enabled, but that doesn't solve my issue which I only noticed recently.

While browsing this support forum, I saw a discussion on Open Source and it was there a similar file manager tool called Double Commander was mentioned.  I looked up DC and came across this Wikipedia comparative list of file managers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_managers

I am surprised that Multi Commander is unfortunately not shown among this list.  I thought you might want to update the Wikipedia to include MC and allow others to discover this wonderful file management tool.

Just a suggestion.  What do you think Mathias? Thank you and keep up the great work
