Yeah, so there is not some kind of external Windows-shell / OS-native copy involved when using CTRL-V in MC? It really looks like this is the case.

I am thinking that, because the Windows progress dialog comes up and because the "created" date stamp is reset to current date, just like Windows and Explorer do it all the time and also because the replace dialog of Windows can pop up. I can't say why MC is not doing the copy on its own and preserve the date stamps as I set in the preferences. Maybe there is some other related setting I overlooked? I checked again, "Keep date stamps" is checked, CTRL-V though, does not restore them.

I have to remember to NOT USE the clipboard CTRL-C+V it seems, kind of difficult! o)

Delete/Rename are not in the MC menu because they are dupicates in the shell menu. but maybe can be added.

Yes, I got missing items into that "native" MC context menu somehow, a "Properties" entry as well.. it seems to work for now, thx! o)

I normally don't make much use of the Windows shell context menu items, only in rare cases. The shell menu is also quite large and messy the longer you run your Windows installation, some tools don't ask whether to integrate into the shell menu, they just do and over time, this menu is bloated with "things".. o)

So I prefer to use a native file manager context menu if it is available, it should work quicker and should be more tidy as well! o)

Ah, ok! o)

It's a bit confusing, suddenly there is a filename instead of a folder path in the "Copy files to.." field and it only seems to work for 1 of many selected items.
Still useful, since the date stamps will be copied when "duplicating" this way instead of using CTRL+C and CTRL-V (which seems to use the Windows shell "Copy" method, which does not preserve "Date created").

Alright, thank you! o)

You can't configure that in the editor for Custom Context menu ?
You can set if items should be shown for folders, files, both ?

Well yes and no.. o)
I can set whether to show the context menu entry for files or folders or both, but that does not help when clicking in the background of the file display, no file or folder selected.

Technically, clicking in the background of the file display should bring the menu items related to a folder, but it's another context, where things like "Rename", "Delete" etc. are not available. I mean they could be available, since why not rename the folder you are currently in, I actually added this functionality into another file manager I am using, but if the options don't work, it makes no sense to show them.

Maybe take a look at this screenshot:
This is Explorer's context menu on the file display background (the current folder), it also does not show "Rename", "Delete" etc., even though I technically should get all the operations being possible on a folder. I guess most people would be irritated if they could click "Delete" and the folder they are in would be removed from the disk, and the path is changed to the parent folder automatically (since the file manager does not have anything to show anymore for "this" path, which does not exist anymore).

Ah, yes.. I played with that setting. Yes, I think it's better to not have that static regular tooltip in the way, if it's not needed, thank you!

I changed the setting!
I am surprised now, that the tooltip for truncated items is a totally different type. It only shows the name, but ok, I can live with that. o)

Thank you!

If you could look into that at some point, that would be nice of course! o)

The black parts in the preview panel somehow degrade the look. That said, I don't think that a file manager needs to have any eye candy, like transparency effects and things like that, but the general look should make you feel comfortable - things need to match visually. I don't even need icons for the file and folder listing, files being coloured by file type is much more useful if you ask me.

I think Multi Commander can be adjusted to make a very decent appearance, I like the look of the file panels (after some fiddling! o). There are also some sensible settings to control the selection and its appearance and some settings to adjust handling the mouse. That's better than in a lot of other file managers, I have seen them all. o)

Thank you for working on this program! o)

I don't want to show all information in the regular tooltip, I was just talking about the positioning. Not sure what you mean, but ok! Thank you! o)

Support and Feedback / Default Forum Notification Settings..
« on: June 27, 2024, 09:33:25 »
Hello Mathias,

I noticed that the default notification settings in the forum, seem to be, to not notify the user of any updates.
Is that intended? I have to say, I often encounter this in other forums, I always wonder why that is.

If somebody comes and needs help or offers advice, why would the forum not tell about updates on this topic by default?
Could be, that some of the users never come back and see the help they got? It's just a guess.. o)

If anybody is annoyed by notification emails, because he asks a lot of questiosn (like me for example.. o), he can still disable the notficiations, but not enabling these by default? I'm not sure it's helpful to keep the forum and topics alive? Just my two cents of course! o)

Thank you! o)

ps: I only went into the profile settings today, to find these two settings not enabled, after I found a reply of yours by accident!

Hello Mathias,

are you, as the author of Multi Commander, the only one giving support here? Aren't there any users around, helping out as well with some questions?
I can imagine you have lot's of other things going in your life and you probably only have limited time for giving support?

What is the difference between "Copy..." and "Copy (Quick)" in the context menu?
I can run both, but both seem to open the same copy wizard dialog with the same options ticked.
I tried to read the docs and was searching through this forum as well, but nothing related showed up.

Thank you!

ps: If you think my questions are annoying.. let me know! o)

Without being able to hide specific items for the current folder context menu, I get this when clicking the file list background.
Most entries do not work, like Delete, Rename, Copy etc., which is kind of expected, but maybe there is a way to hide them at least?

I was trying to get rid of the windows shell context menu, it makes things slow and if I would use the Copy/Paste from the windows shell menu, timestamps will not be copied, which is why I need to use a different file manager than Explorer in the first place, apart from hundreds of other quirks of course! o)

While we are at it, is there a way to hide custom context menu entries, if the context menu is triggered on the file display background, so the actual target is not a folder/file from the listed items, but the folder I am in?

And this is the list of "Explorer Panel" internal commands, when opened from the "User Commands" editor:

There is more stuff in here, I noticed, because I was searching for the native "Rename" function, which was present here, but not in the "Custom Context Menu Editor".
I had to create a wrapper entry in "User Commands" using this native "Rename" command, to be able to create a "Rename" menu entry in the "Custom Context Menu Editor" (by using my wrapping user command).

Is there some criteria on internal commands, why they would not show up directly in the list of "Explorer Panel" internal commands, when in the "Custom Context Menu Editor"?

Thank you!

Hi!.. o)

Another question, why is it, that the "Custom Context Menu Editor" is showing less / not all of the "Explorer Panel" internal commands?

This is the list of "Explorer Panel" internal commands, when opened in "Custom Context Menu Editor":

Here is the preview tooltip position in comparison to the general tooltip. This has more flexible positioning, as it opens at mouse pointer position, which allows to control where it opens, so other filenames and information is not hidden.

15
Talking tooltips: Is there a setting to affect the regular tooltip somehow? Especially the position it opens on?
It always opens directly over the filename column, hiding all the filenames below, in contrast to the preview tooltip, which opens at the mouse cursor position.

16
As probably already mentioned in the other thread, setting the font size in the template does not seem to have an effect on the preview panel, it only seems to affect the tooltip.

Here is a screenshot demonstrating what happens, when I set the FontSize to "80", only the text in the tooltip gets smaller.

Thank you! o)

Hello Matthias,

thank you for your response. I tried to explicitly change to dark mode and back, but no way. The preview keeps being black, the switch between light/dark mode ruined all my font settings and probably some more, but I had a copy of the folder.. so I was back to where I left off very quickly.

I don't get how the preview template is related to the multi viewer. I can add random text to a preview template and it will show in the preview tooltip and in the preview panel, but setting a FontSize e.g., only affects the preview tooltip font size. I also found a font setting in..

MultiCommander_v14.1.0.3017_x64_portable\Config\Extensions\MultiFileViewer\MultiFileViewer.xml, but it had no effect.
MultiCommander_v14.1.0.3017_x64_portable\Config\Extensions\MultiFileViewer\ColorFormatting.xml

There are 2 more config files for the same plugin, looking very similar, why do these exist in 2 places, do you know?
MultiCommander_v14.1.0.3017_x64_portable\Extensions\MultiFileViewer\MultiFileViewer.xml
MultiCommander_v14.1.0.3017_x64_portable\Extensions\MultiFileViewer\ColorFormatting.xml

This plugin also seems to appear under various names, as "MultiFileViewer" and "File Viewer" in "Manage Plugins and Extension.."
and as "MultiDataViewer" in "File Type Setup..". Is this the same plugin each time?

In general I get a bit confused, if you find the time to answer, thank you.. o)

1) "Preview Customization.. " in the menu, it allows to map preview templates to file extensions, so this is (mainly) for the tooltip, right?
It somehow affects the preview panel as well though. Since any text entered in a template, will also show up in the preview panel.

2) You said: "the panel view is the entire multiviewer that shown the data. so it support  highlighthing and lots more stuff"
It seems to me that "MultiDataViewer" under Menu -> "File Type Setup.. " is the viewer, which opens in a separate window only?
Or is there a way to make it work in the preview panel as well?

3) Is there a compatible Total Commander (or anything) plugin, that would allow setting a Font when previewing text files in the preview panel?
Maybe there is something that allows to handle images a bit better (quickly zoom in/out in the preview panel e.g.)?

When speaking of "Preview Panel", I mean what the MC GUI is declaring as "Preview Panel", shown as tab in one of the two file displays.

Thanks! o)

Hello! o)

One more Styling-Question.. o)
Is there a way to change the look of what is wrapped around the preview template definitions?
The preview template definitions seem to be used for both, the preview tooltip and the preview panel.

I think I like the look of the tooltip, but the black background and margins being used in the preview panel look kind of odd to me. The black color looks like a left over or artefact from previously using a dark theme or something, but I did not mess with the themes yet, if I remember correctly o). Can these be colors and margins be changed someshow?

Thank you! o)

Hello there! o)

I'm new here and new to Multi Commander as well, I played with MC for some days.. Now I have some questions, maybe you can help? Thank you in advance! o) I attached a screenshot of a preview tooltip and the preview panel showing the same file content.

Is there a way to set the font used for the FileTextContent-Tag?

In the preview tooltip, the font being used seems to be Tahoma/8, which I set basically everywhere in MC for now, in the preview panel though, the font seems to be "New Courier/10". I am quite ok with "New Courier", but not at size 10, it looks squished! o)

It would be nice if there was a way to set "New Courier/9" for the FileTextContent-Tag, which is being used in both types of previews, is that possible somehow?

Thank you! o)
